Don't Forget Tb Insulate If you're planning on rinishing off your basement this spring the Certain- Teed Home Institute recommends first insulating the basement wals and then covering with gypsum board or panel- ling. Insuation wilI flot only help keep the room cooler in sumrmer and warnier in winter, but it wil make the living space more comfortable. Befbre you begin the job you'll need work gloves, a hammer, common and rnasonry nails, 2 x 2s and 2 x 4s, a serrated knife, a heavy duty staple gun, and kraft-fitced fiber glass batts or rolîs. Start the job by nailing bottom plates (2 x 2s) to the base of the walls with a hammer and masonry nails (Figure 1). Then nail top plates (2 x 2s) to the joists of the subflooring above. Both bottom and top plates should be placed 3/ " out from the wall. Next, using common nails, fasten the 2 x 4 studs 16 or 24 inches apart (measured from the center of one stud to the center of the next [Figure 2]).
