Naméd thé best band, thé Whitby Cadets pickéd up a first place in* thé drill without arms compétition and recéivéd thé cock of thé walk award for thé sea cadet coré with thé highéstéefficiéncy rating of thé year. "Thé amazing thing about theéwin is that haîf of thé band havén't had an instrument in théir hands until six months ago,"' said band instrue- tor, Tony Lidstoné. Thé band défeated sea cadet corps from. Oshawa, Ajax and Scarborough to capture thé titlé. Thé band is com- priséd of 19 members aged 13 to 18, ail mém- bers of thé RCSCC Whitby 226. Thir in- struments includé séven drums, four glocks and eight bugles. For this year's com- pétition, thé band mém- bers sélécted thé 10 minutés of music for thé fréestylé portion of thé compétition them- selves. "Thé cadets selécted thé music and arranged it," said Mr. Lidstoné. "Thé only time wé helpéd thém was when they came to us. " At thé compétition thé band was inspectéd for dress, and marked on their drill routines. Théy ran through a compulsory set of music and drill and pérformeci théir 10 minute fréestylé. "It. was a brutal marking systém," rémarkéd drum instruc- tor Paul McCabé. Also Amadeus récéived -the Spécial Adjudicator's Award for Costumé Design. David Laing receivéd a nomination for Bést 'Performance by a Male in a Suppor- ting Rolé and Chris Covert 'récéivéd a nomination as Best Diréctor. Thé ten nominations, five for reach of thé two plays adjudicatéd, are thé most éver récéived by thé Whiitby Theatér Company. Thé final présentation of thé year for Whitby, Comé Back To Thé Fivé & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, is now in réhéarsal. Dates for this play are May 1, 2, 3, & 10, il, 12. Tickets are available from Mid- évents in Whithy throughout the year. They annualiy per- form at the remnem- brance day ceremonies and also at the Christ- mas and Santa Claus Parades. At the latter two events, they receive an honorarium and thé rest of the year they rely on their tag days and thé financial contributions of local organizations. In récent yéars the bandi has recéived sup- port from thé Whitby Kiwanis Club and last yéar théy received a $2,000 grant fromn the town. Thé band has réceivéd treméndous support this yéar from thé Whitby andi Brooklin Légions and Mr. McCabe said spécial thanks were due, to thé Brookin Kinsmen club which provîdéd $3,500 to buy new drums and a new bugle. Théy did not approach thé town for a grant this year. Thé band is currently preparing to represent Whitby in the Provincial finals to be held at Camp Borden in Barrie fromn May 23 to 25. Thé weekend will bé funded by thé Departmént of National Defence, and the kids will sléep in thé barracks and eat army food.
