She was born and raised in Ashburn and stili maintains her own home there among mnany of her children, grandchldren and great-grandchildren. Both she and her husband, Frank descended from the early pioneers who first settled this part of Ontario. Frank was a direct descendent of Jabez Lynde and they both represented the family at the opening of Lyinde House in Whitby. Evelyn's famlly first set- tled in Ashburn and there are still members of the family occupying part of the original farm. Following the example of their forebears, she and Frank farmed for many years while raising a brood of fine children. Some of the fondest memories of my chldhood are those spent visiting the farm where there was neyer a lack of playmates or things to do. Wherever they lived there was always a steady stream of relatives, friends and neighbours to add to the confusion with Evelyn in the centre, making order out of chaos. One memory in particular is of the summer kit- chen where Evelyn'and her eider daughters were making dozens of pies to feed the threshers. Right in the middle of it ail, we younger children were 'helping' by peeling apples and tossing the skins over our shoulders to see what letters they would speli when they feul. No one yelled at us to get out of the way, they just worked around us. It taught me a lesson in patience with my own children. But life wasn't ail work, like ber mother before her, she took time out to enjoy life and was always game to try something new. Like the time in her 60's when she decided to try out a grandson's go-cart. As reported to me by one of her daughters, she went roaring up Ashburn Rd. until she hit a pothole and careened into the ditch. My source said as she ran up the road to rescue ber mother she prayed, "Please don't let ber die like this, how will I ever explain it to my friends at the funeral?"~ Her children not only inherited ber zest for life but ber sense of humour as well. Now, her whole clan are inviting everyone who knows her to come to Burn's Church on May 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. to help them celebrate her milestone 9th birthday. I hope to see you there.
