Little Marketing and Motivation on Mary Street Is one of the members of the Downtown Business Improvement Ares who has seen the need for providing aesthically pleasing buildings for upscale businesses and has acted on lt. In a racent interview with Mr. Little Il became apparent why he has confidence in investing in Downtown Whitby. 0. Why Did You Coma to Whitby? A. Threa yaars ago i made my f irst invasîmant in downtown Whtby. In 1983 i wss looking for a location for my Marketing and Advertislng firm. Although the economy was down and interest rates were outrageously high t appeared that downtown Whitby lead by an aggressiva Mayor, Coun- cillors and Planning Department along with the BIA. was the place to In- vest. 0. Are you happy you made the move? A. I couldnt be happier. 1 think downtown is jusl on the leading edge of becoming the next successfully revitalized downtown in Southern Ontario. With the current building boom and the tramendous amount of new residents who formaily lived In the Markham arnd Toronto areas, the down- town will have 10 supply these new residencas with the kmnd of variety of services and shops that they were used bo having. Generaliy, i feel there is a tremendous social need to recreate the feeling of belonging to a community that comas wth a central downtown environ- ment. The 1960s and 70s brought the sprawling suburban subdivisions with nothing as a social and cultural centre outside of sIrip plazas and heavy commercialized mails with no feeling of community People want and need hlstory as a backbone to the future. Q. Could you tell us about your current proect? A. Since 1983. i have accummulated several propert 'as on Mary St. W. with pienty of commercial frontage. Ail of these properties are century or near century homes. Recently, 1 heard about the possible demolition of two, 75 year old homes scross the street from me on the corner of Byron and Mary Streets. These homes were going 10 be demnolished to maka way for an attractiveiy designed, heritage style fownhouse condominium project. In approaching the developer, Sorichattie Construction, they were very responsive 10 my ides of moving the homes raîher Ihan demolishing them. A quick check with Bob Short, DIrector of the Planning Department, bold me tha1 the Town of Whitby was delighted with the ides The Sorichettis were good enough to delay their construction scheduie in order to give us ime to move the structures. These graclous old buildings wîll be placed between my existlng centurV homes with f rontaga on Mary Sf W f0 create a unique commercial strealscape which when complet ad wîll accommodate a proper mix of boutiques, restaurant and professional offices Ail buildings wil be brought back to their original charac ter and façade and ba tînked with in terlocking brick waikways and landscapinq to asow indîvîdualîly and yel create the feelingof a unique shopping area This whoie project and many other prolects in downtown Whîlby are possible because of the quick response and hassie f ree' systemn that Mayor Attersley and the Town of Whitby has developed to accommodate those who are willing to invest their money in ftha fut ure 0f downtown Whitby If you want 10 buy or leassesa proparty in one of the fastesl growîng com. munities in Ontario, now is the lime. 1 will continue lu invesl here. bacause 'believe In downtown Whitby.
