Free Press Staff Photo minstry approves 306 hospital beds The Ministry of Health bas announced the allocation of 306 hospital beds for Durham Region, a 30 percent increase over the current number of hospital beds, in the region. The announcement, part of the ministry's $232 million province- wide health care fun- ding program, provides for 201 chronic care beds and 105 acute care beds to be allocated within the region accor- 20%OFF ALL WINTER COVERS & BAGS 1.8 Years Experience ding to the recommen- dations of the Durham Region District Health Council's advisory committees. According to Mick Peters, the council's executive director, however, the emphasis of the allocation will fall to Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital, Ajax-Pickering Hospital and the Oshawa General Hospital where the most pressing needs have been identified. The coundl's ad- visory committees will meet over the next few months to determine where the additional beds will be distributed. Peters said the coun- cil had recently recom- mended to the ministry that the shortage of acute and chronic care beds in the region is "fast becoming a serious problem." The 306 new beds are the minimum requested by the council to alleviate the bed shortage and will only address some of the immediate shor- tages. With rapid com- munity growth and an increase in the seniors population, Peters said Durham will reqwire additional beds and in- creased funding if the council is to meet its long range needs. At least $20 million is anticîpated from the province for the capital costs of providing the 306 new beds FALL POOL SALE 1632Rct 8995, INCLUDES: o14 Gauge Steel WaIs.30 mill insroBullnose CoplngeSklmmer@MaIn Drain*Jacuzi FuItur end pump@S' DIvIng Bord3.Stop Ladder »Vacuum Kit*Mlntnance Kt*SalesTax eSolar Blanket.Wlinter Covor * Cernent dock 3'x3'x3'x3' <FuIIy sxcavated end Installed) 728.1 113 1251 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa, Ont.
