Town CrIers have been In existence for cen- turies and began as "carriers of news" before news pape rs'ori gi1nated.. Town Criers were at the height of their popularity ln the l8th Century ln Europe and the custom immigrated to North America with the early settiers. Aithough the last officiai Town Crier ln Toronto dates back to 1834, we are now experiencing a revival of the Town Crier as part of Canadian Heritage. Today, the Town Crier serves a dual fun- ctlon; delivering proclamations and representing the Town as Its Goodwili Ambassador. Since Whitby offers its own hIstorIcal fiavour and character, The Ontario Guild of Town Criers and Mayor Atterstey agree that it woulId on ly be f It- ting to have our own Town Crier. This indivIduai wouid "shout" about the many positive events our commun ity has to off er.
