Beginning at 9:30 a.m. September 24, sonne 1,100 students will be setting out on foot from the Ajax school to the Greenwood Conser- vation Area north of Taunton Rd. on Church St. After breaking for lunch at the conser- vation area, the studen- ts will then return to the school by the same route - a round trip of approximately 22 kilometers. According to DO'C-A- THON coordinator Bet- tIi Oberhansli, the trek is about eight kiiometers shorter than ini past years because organizers were con- cerned for the safety of the large group and wanted to keep the route down to a manageable size. Participation in the walk bas grown tremendously in recent years,, according to Oberhansli, and 'with 1,100 walkers to look af- ter, maintalning the safety of the students is a big job. Both Durham Regional Police and St. John Ambulance will be manning the route throughout the day and O'Connor teachers W111 be supervising ail sec- tions of the route. Grade 13 students will be responsible for registration and setting up the check points along the route. Parent volunteers will be organizing lunch at the conservation area. Each student par- ticipating in the walk - only grade 13 students and those with a note from their doctor will not be walking - must collect a minimum of $60 in pledges and Oberhansl said some students have already raised close to $300. If everything goes accor- ding to plan, the school should have an ad- ditional $65,000 in its coffers when ail the pledges have been collected. Last year DO'C-A- THON 'participants raised $50,000. Oberhansli said even though the province bas extended funding to Cathoiic high schools, it wiil be another year before funding is provided for grade 13. Whether the DO'C-A- THON will be heid once full funding is com- pleted remains to be seen,' according to Oberbansli. However, with the ever- escalating cost of programs, she said there will always be a need for some form of fundraising to offset costs. At a special assembly September 18, Durham Regional Police will in- struct the students about safety on the walk-a-thon route 'and students will also stage a number of skits promôting safety. .Approximately 350 Whitby students at the Catholic high àchool are expected to participate in the walk. The committee, a requirement of Bill 30, will have three trustees tromn each of the boards.
