"We gave it our best shot but we weren't good enough," said a dlsappointed coach, Peter Vipond, after the game. While the Westmin- ster players were celebrating their. win, the Redmen were sitting i their dressing roomn thînking of what could have been. kThere were no heroie-s' for the Redmen 'this year after last year's amazing come. fromn beblnd wln. The Red- men were down 3-0 in games against the Salmonbelbîes playing on the west coast last year and rebounded to take the next four bringing the Mann Cup home to Brooklin. "We bad a lot of in- juries, but that's not an excuse. There are no excuses, we just weren't good enough," said Vipond. But the Redmen ap- peared good enough to the standing room only crowd when they had a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. The Redmen dominated the first period offensively, taking tinie to set-Up the Westminster end- and remainlng patient until they had a good sbot. "We have neyer lost a third period," said d'Easurn after the game. d'Easum obviously enjoyed the victory, not flinching when a team member doused hlm, and members of the media*,'witb cham- pagne. "This makes up for last year,"p said d'Easuni referring to the Redmen's come from behind win. "Last year was embarrasing but this ia 50 sweet. I think it was even better winning here than at home." d'Easum didn't agree that the Redmen dominated the first period, saying that his team kept hitting the posts. "But. I just told them to keep working and working. The harder you work, eventually the breaks will come your way. The guys did it ail themselves. " Brookin went ahead 4- 0 in the second period on a goal by Dale Ker- nohan and seemed New Westminster Salmonhelies player's Steve Voelpel, captain Erie Cowieson and Lyle Robinson accept the Mann Cup from Dean Meleod third vice president of lacrosse Canada. I don't know." beat the Brooklin Redmen 8-6 at Iroquois Park Iast Wednesday night to win the Mann Cup series four games to two. With the series over, Vipond will now turn his attention to reconstruc- ting the team for next year. -We have some holes to fuI and I don't know if anyone is leaving," he said. "Tbey're al pretty young. " But what he really hopes to see next year is a fourtb team in tbe On- tario Lacrosse league the Redmen play in. At present, along with Brooklin, there is Peterborough and Brampton. And accor- ding to Vipond, everyone knew Brooklin would face Peter- borougb for the right to represent the east in the Mann Cup. The Western league bouses five teanis and they play a total of 24 games wbile in the east there is a 12 game scbedule. Vipond said an extra teamn would add more games to tbe scbedule resulting in better coni- petition.
