E. WHITBY 668-5481 Juniors OBA Champs By TRAVIS LINDGREN The Whitby Juniors have captured the On- tario Basebal Association Junior B championships. The fast-paced weekend opened up with Witby meeting Burlington in Peter- borough. Whitby pitcher Greg lannarilli went five innings before receiving relief belp from Rob Lightle. Lightle went on to push the game into extra in- nings. Tony Sorichetti doubled and scored the winning run when pinch bitter John Phillips bit a drive to right centre field. As a resuit of defeating Burlington Witby went on to meet Peterborough in the Eastern Ontario Basebaîl Association cbampionship. In the best of five series Whitby took two games as did Peter- borough. In tbe fifth game Whitby got fine pitcbing fromn Dale Jobnson and Rob Ligbtle and went on to clobber Peterborougb 12-2. In tbe first round of the Ontario Basebal Association champion. sbip Whitby met tbe only other undefeated team, Orillia. In the fir- st gamne pitcher Brian Grylîs put in a fine ef- fort with reliever Rob Ligbtle coming in with a 6-2 cushion lef t by Grylis. In the sixth Whitby scored two runs to clinch tbe game 8-5. In tbe O.B;A. finals against Leamiîngton, Whitby's Scott Burnett threw a no itter for seven innings. Wbitby took a two-run lead and held the lead tbrougbout most of tbe gamne. Bur- nett, in addition to a fine pitcbing performance, had a .824 batting average to win MIVP bonours for the tourney. This finisbed off a very busy season for the Witby Juniors who finisbed 30-13-1. Coaches Dean Keating and Steve Tutton felt the team's many tournaments belped tbeir performan- ce in tbe provincials., Congratulations to ail the Whitby Juniors andl their coaching staff.
