PAGE 2. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBE-R17.à 1986. WHITBY FREE PRE~SS -ýPAW to continue Haiving investigated wbat the private sector bas ta offer, members of the Pickering Ajax Witby Joint Animal Contrai Committee (PAW) are expected this week to approve a long term agreement ta bave the Town of Wit- by provide animai con- trai services for the tbree municipalities. The tawn bas been providing animal con- frai services since January of this year wben PAW refused to pay a 48 percent budget hike requested by thse Ontario Humane Society - former operators of the service. At that time, camxnittee members decided tbe town service would be a temporary measure un- tii they bad bad time ta, investigate thse private sector. In June the cammittee invited ten- ders from thse private sector and only one was submitted. At a meeting this af- ternoon (September 17) committee members will review thse one bid received but PAW chairman Ross Batten believes it's a safe bet the committee wil decide ta stick with the Town of Witby service. Witb tbe private con- tractor proposing a budget in excess of $600,000 ta pravide the same service currentiy offered by thse town at less, tban a third the price, Batten feels it's no contest. "I don't think tbere's any question. It's cer- tainly going to be my position tbat (the private sector bld) doesn't do anytblng for us. We promised the taxpayers back in January tbat we'd go ta tender just to make sure we were getting the best service for the maney. Naw that we've done that, I imagine we'Il proceed with (the townîs services) on a long teran basis,' said Batten on Friday. Town cierk Dan McKay, who is respon- sibie for overseeing tbe town operation, was in-' clined ta agree. "Obviousiy the bid is significantiy more than we're paying right now. 1 don't want to prejudge the camnsittee but I think (thse outcome) is fairiy obvious," said McKay. McKay said tawn's animal c budget for 1986 $172,600 and bas, the service's reN and expenses ta d predicted that tih vice would camne budget. However, Pickering clerk Bruce Taylor took exception ta Mr. Hugbes assessment of the con- tract terms. Taylor, wbo was responsible for averseeing the ten- dering process, questioned wbetber Mr. Hughes bad even read tbe terms of the con- tract. "I cantt believe he'd say that. Tbe contract does provide for these things. In fact it's really the same contract they aperated under. It provides for - adoption, unwanted animnais and the proper care of thase animais. And it provides for proper eutbanasia by a veterinarian," said Taylor.
