"We've got just a super teani," says Mike Primeau, who shares coachlng duties with Larry Windover. Primeau was hesitant about making predic- tions but he feels ex- perience and balance inay make this year's teani stronger, despite changes. Last year's team cap- tais Simon Ashdown is flot back this year whlle goalie Richard Milsi4p bas moved to Camn- bridge. But goalie David Mit- chell bas been irs- pressive as bas Bobby Torrens, from last Year's Whitby bantani II team. They'li shaft puck-stopping- duties this season. Richard Ulhrich and Jay Lee have also moved up from the ban- tam II team while Sean Thair, who played in Kincardine last season, is another strong ad- dition. In exhibition play against AAA teams, Whitby won seven games, lost seven and tied three, an im- pressive record for an AA team. .The team has begun the season with four winsandaloss. The loss was to Thornhili, the only AAA club in their league this season. The other opposition clubs in the league this year are AA teams fromn Newmarket, Richmond Hil, Markham, Pickering and Ajax. "At this tme of year, we're happy," says Prinieau of the team's showlng so far, noting there were only il players in the Whitby' lineup in the loss to Tiiorahill. The bantams picked up their third and fourth wins over the weekend. Brian Monro scored three goals in a 7-3 win over Ajax in a game played Saturday night, the regular home gaie date, at Iroquois Park arena. Paul Windover scored two goals whle David Grant and Ulhrich had one each. Torrens was in net. Dave Mitchell was in net in a 5-2 win over Markham on Sunday. Last year, the teani played 87 games, in- cluding 14 on a trip to Finland, Sweden and the Soviet Union where the Whitby bantams won nine and bast five. Prineau knows it's a long season and he's hoping the team gradually builds win- ning momentuan toward playoff time. The bantams will take part in a large tour- nament in Lake Placid, N.Y., Nov. 20 to 23, and wil aiso polay in a Quebec tournament in February. Midgets are competitive despite loss of players Despite the loss of several top players from last year's club, coach Jack Middl eton expects a good season from the 19886-87 Whitby midget select hockey teani. «'I think by Christ- mas, we're going to have a good club,".says Middleton. He is especially pleased with the goaltending of Shawn O'Hara, a newcomer to the tearn who played in Scar- borough lasi year. "He is just playing excellent; " says the Whitby coach. Back froni last year's teani are Danny O'Con- nor, Colin Robertson, Wayne Cornish. Jack Ciilano, Brad Mac- Donnel and Steve Det- meir. The AA club lost nine players froni last year's tearn: Mike O'Rourke, Craig Fisher, Wayne Verge and Troy McKay went to Oshawa, Frank Corrick to the Markham junior B team, Craig Donaldson to the Ajax junior C teani, Mike Watters to the Port Perry junior C team and Kevin Mtchell to the Uxbridge' junior C team. This year the Whitby team wil play AA teams from Pickering, Markham and Oshawa and a AAA teani from Newmarket. Last year the teani finished last in regular season play in a league with AAA teanis froni Oshawa, Peterborough, Belleville and Kingston and AA tennis from Kingston, Markham and Peterborough. Here two members of the Whitby squad bring the puck into the Newmarket zone. Bantarns eye top 4 This season's Whitby bantai AA hockey club could be aîong the top teams in the league, says coach Hank Kaleta. Most of the players froni last year's teani are in the 1986-87 ineup, and Kaleta describes his teani as big in size. Bryce Perey and Richard Stolk will share netminding duties while centres Mike Fulton and Dean Mizen will lead the offe 'nce along with winger Darren Lee. Bobby Wiletts anchors the defence. The league, with both AA and AAA tennis, is composed of Markham, Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Thornhil and Peterborough, ail froni last year's league, and niew league additions Newmarket, Aurora, Barrie and Unionville. Kingston and Belleville are not in this year's league.
