Vol. 16,No. 44 28 pages Crossing guards rejected A request by the' ,Durham Region Romnan f Catbolic Separate School Board for il adult crossing guards at varlous locations in the town bas been turned dlown 'by Whitby's operations comittee. The declslon was ren- dered followlng a 20- minute public meeting Monday, wlth officiais frons the board and separate school suppor- ters who were opposed tothiecrosslngglurd.' Debate -became 50 heated -at one point that Catharine Tunney, who chairs the transpor- tation commlttee of the' board, accused the town Of havlnïg 'twô sets of' Heated debate at meeting rules in the town, one for the public school board and one for the separate." The commlrnttee heard that the request was made because the board is revlslng its transpor- tation pollcy. Gerr O'Nell, con- troUler of transportation for the board, said the revised policy would leave some students walklng .to school, students who In prevlous years would have been bussed._And- to ensure the safety of those students, crossing guards would ha needed. But that did not sit well wth committee members. IlSo you're putting the onus on ns to ensure the gafety of the kids,"' said coundillor Joe Drumm. "You're taking the onus off yourself and putting It on us. I don't think you're belng fair asking us to solve your problem. The' town is being sucked in here. On the mmn*ve If the policy is in tat- ters that's your fault, flot - ours," sald coun- cilor Drumm. Tunmey told the com- mittee that the board is not trying to shirk is responsibility and is slmply Iooklng out for the safety of children. Aznong the il locations requested by the board, three would involve crosslng studen- ts across a four-lane ro4dwvay -Dundas St. and Bell Dr.; Anderson St. and Bradley Dr; and Anderson St. and Crawforth St. Mayor Bob Attersley said this decision by the board was'"as imine." "lIt is ridiculous to bave students cross four lanes of traffic. I arn totally opposed to that," said the mayor whose comment received a tremendous amount of applause from those who attended the meeting. .The committee turned down the request saying that the locations do flot meet the warrant system established by the town. There are flot enough cildren crossing at those locations to Warrant a guard. But Tunney told the committee that children are not now crossing the streets. That wil change with the board's new pollcy, thus creating a catch 22 situation. The committee was also given petition with 181 signatures on it from separate school parents opposed to the crossing guards. Speaking on behaif of the residents, Lynne Childerhouse of 22 Michael Blvd. told the committee the im- plementation Of croesin&, guards would be unsafe for their children due to high traffic counts and a lack of sidewalks. The committee also heard that the cost for hiring the guards would be $36,00 to the town. Board supports bilingualism Tim is shakin'!
