PAGE .. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3,9 Leafs centre visits Lynde Toronto Maple Leafs center Dan Daoust decided he wanted to pursue a hockey career when he was 15 or 16 but he never forgot how im- portant an education is. "It's important to know how to read and write," said Daoust as he stood before Gr. 6, 7 and 8 students from West Lynde Public School, supported by two crutches and his leg in a cast. The 26-year-old Daoust was at the school last Friday along with Toronto magician Jim Helik as part of the Frontier College Bookshow program. "Today,;illiteracy is a social and economical problem which has to be addressed," said Stewart Young co- ordinator of the program. Besides hearing from the Leafs forward and enjoyng the magic, the students were also presented with a free book, courtesy of Bookshow. A national organization, BookShow works with adults, the disabled and travels to prisons. And for the past two years children have been a prime target for the organization. "If we can get them to think reading is something you not only do at school, that's great," saidYoung. The organization buys the books they give out from publishing firms at discount prices. And the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has given the group a vote of con- fidence by helping to endorse learning how to read. The biggest round of applause Daoust received at West Lynde was when he toid the students he suffered a broken leg during a fight. After Daoust finished answering questions, each of the students received a free book with Daoust's autograph. Books on every subject were available. Young points out that any book is good to read, as long as students are reading. "If they want to read about Hulk Hogan, we'll get them a book on Hulk Hogan, as long as they read it," he said. During his brief speech Daoust told the students he expects to be out of action for two more months. And what does he think about the Leafs performance to date? "If we keep going the way we're playing, and with a bit of luck, we could go ail the way." Hospital meeting Dec.1 1 A public meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec.11 at 7:30 p.m. in the~cafeteria of Dr. J.O.
