The study came about when a community agency told the planning council that there were inadequate free or low- coat rec facilities for 10w -income or unemployed youth. Doherty conducted the study in July and Auguat, contacting 28 people between 17 and 25 in the Oshawa Centre, Bond Towers, Whitby Maîl and Bowmanville mail. The locations were chosen as typical cf places in which the study subjects could ho found. Most of those contac- ted did not use municipal recreation department programa. About 80 per cent were satisfied with existing facilities but two-thirds aaid there waa not enough advertislng or existing fadilities. Only 14 per cent said coat was a factor in joining programs. More than 40 recreation providers were aIse interviewed. The study recommen- da that extensive ex- posuro to recreational opportunities should. begin in school physical education programa. While it is net visible te those using the recreational facility, the Anne Ottenbrite Pool has been drained and the dock around it is almost non-existent. "We've been having leaka and we decided net only te fix them but put in a systemn where they can ho easily repaired in the future,", sgaid Larry Morrow, the directer of parka and recreation. That system involves. cutting eut the deck and replacing it with lids that will fit ever the pipes. "The problem we had in the past was if there was a leak we had te destrey the deck or close the pool," said Merrew. Work la also being done on the finish to the pools walls and floor. Merrow said a Mar- menite finish is being applied which should step cemplaints about how' reugh the finish was in the paat. The recreatien depar- tment ia aise leoking at placing diving platfer- ms at the deep end of the pool. Morrew said thia- la being done at the requeat'cf the Whitby Iroquoia Swim Club. Since no coat has been placed on the work Morrew ceuld net say if it will be done. Work atý the pool is acheduled te finish in the latter part cf January or early February. In the past few days the construction of the second ice-pad has been held up by the in- stallation of a gas lino. But that was expected to be completed this week. Footings for the wall are then to be put into place. Merrow said the rink is on achedulewith the werk expected te be finished by September of 1987. The arena will. then be able te support ice during the summer months. The other major work at the arena la the con- struction cf ad- ministration offices. STo make room for the offices, the walkway frem the pool to the !ce arena will'be extended te the west. Ase, washroomas will be buflt in thelobbyarea. Merrow expects the office work te ho coin- pleted before the second ice pad is built. Safety work will also. be completed at Whit- ney Hall.
