"lWisely, I suppose," was a remark made by Councillor Joe Bugelli at Monday's ad- ministrative committee meeting at which he an- nounced the decision by Bolahoad. The application was opposed> by many residents of ,igh, Palace and Mary Sts., who signed a petition against the proposal. At *a Nov. 17 meeting, they said the development was high density and conflicted witb existing low density use of lands, primarily single family dwellings. Several residents attended Monday nigt's meeting. Bugelli also sought ta ensure residents, that the existing R2 or low density zoning would no'. change in future. He introduced a motion, and, won sup- port from committee members Gerry Emm and chairman Marcel Brunelle, ta freeze tbe zaning despite tbe ob- jections. of planning direotor' Bob Short. Short said the secon- dary plan study now un- derway is considering zoning for that area, in- cluding the praperty. «"I do not think it's proper ta extract a smali piece of property from the study," he said. "lYou can't isolate it. from the ultimbte designation of those lands." Bugelli responded that some assurance should be given to residents tbat there will be no furtber proposaIs for higber density development on the property. Brunelle at first said the motion could leave a "false impression." He added that the motion could later be super- ceded by the secondary plan. Bugelli agreed that council, wich will con- sider the motion next Mnnday, could also reject the proposai ta freeze zoning. He said the number of people concerned over the property's designation warranted that something be done: "Let's not suck and blow,"' he said twice during discussion.. Emm said the motion would alert potential developers ta, "what the rule is"' for the praper- ty. The monthly report issued by the Town's public works depar- tment shows that the Town issued $6,049,753 in permits for the month of November brining the year's total ta date ta $103,497,705. And if the department can process more per- mit applications which have been made, there is no reason the town can't top $115 million by year's end. Mayor Bob Attersley said there are twa residential permits currently being processed, one for Durham Christian Homes valued at $6 million and one for the Durham Region Non- Profit Housing Cor- poration for $3 million for a housing project on Nichol Ave. Also on tap are in- dustrial and commer- cial permits valued at more than $4 million. Mayor Attersley said a glance at the down- town area shows the investmnent being put in- ta the town. According ta, the mayor, the main reasan people are învesting is due ta the increasing population in the town. Topping this month's report is a $n&.3 million commercial permit for the work currently un- derway at Iroquois Park. The report also shows that residential permits received in November totalled $1,734 while in- dustrial permits totalled $1.8 million. 1A quick glance at the report shows that the town is ahead of last year's numbers in almost every category. Institutional permits are up more than 2,000 per cent over last year. (Last year by the end of November, the Town had received $345,900 in institutional permits while this year's that figure is $7,843,370.
