Whitby defeated Ux- bridge 5-1 and then Ajax 5-4 iii an overtime <thriller to reach the final of the tournament in Oakwood. Pickering defeated Whitby 9-3 and 10-2 i regular season action during the past two weeks. But Whitby jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tournament final and then held off their league rivals for a 5-3 win. "We just came out flying," said Whitby coach Charley Washer of the final. "lWe çould have had eight goalsi."I Whitby goaltender .Drew Kawa came up big ,,"in the late stages of the -game to hold off the comeback attempt by Pickering., 1 Kawa and Mike Mit- chell, who shared goaltending duties in all 'three games, were ~steady throughout the *bantam A tournament, said Washer. -Whltby managed to claim the championship "despite the absence of several top players due to iajury. Defina put Whitby in- to the final when he scored after 52 seconds of overtfime against Ajax. Ajax, an AA team, led 2-0 before Whitby climbed back to take the lead. Ajax tied it to force the overtime. Garton and Jamie Brousseau each scored twice for Whitby. Duff scored two goals while Defina, Knowles and Garton had the other goals in the 5-3 win over Pickering.* "It was real team ef- fort," said Washer, crediting Chad Harvey, Kevin Washer, Rob Dawson and Steve Van- derheyden with ex- cellent defensive play. Washer said Brousseau was probably the best player overali for Whitby in the tournament. Fe rs ht Les.wick takes gold iin meet Julie Leswick of the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club won a gold medal in the Youth Cup swim meet in Etobicoke Dec. 4-7. Leswick wio first in the 50-metre freestyle event for girls 13 and 14 in the meet, which at- tracted Canada's top young swimmers. Leswick wasalso nin- th in the 100-metre fly and l6th in the 100 breaststroke. Her Whitby club teammate, Wendy Primeau, was fourth in the 800 freestyle and seventh i the 400 freestyle, also in the girls 13 and 14 category. Scott Currie was sixtn in the 200 backstroke and ninth in the 100 backstroke, for boys il and 12. Jlll Morrice was l3th in the 100 fly for girls il and 12 while Mark Kelly placeil lSth in the 100 breaststroke for boys 13 and 14. Leswick Primeau, Heather Armitage and Janice Currile all com- peted in the Esso Inter- national meet in Etobicoke Nov. 28-30. Ail four Whitby swimmers turned in best performances against -world.-,clas competition fromn East Germany, Britain, the Soviet Union, Swit- zerland and the U.S. Armitage had the top finish by Whitby swim- mers as she placed l7th in the 100 backstroke. Several members of the Whitby club took part in the Burlington invitational Nov. 28-30. Charissa Morrice and Aaron Bradley each had fourth-place finishes.* Morrice was fourth in the 200 fly for 13 and 14- year-old girls and sixth in the 100 fly. Bradley was fourth in the 200 fly for boys 13 and 14. Danielle Johnson was fifth in the 50 backstroke for girls 10 and under. Rick Marsh was sixth in the 100 individual medley. for boys 10 and under., Team winas two in Quebec Whitby's junior B ringette teamn won two out of four games in a tournament Dec. 12-14 in Dollard des Or- meaux, Quebec. Jodi Sinden and Christine Smith each had two goals and Stacy Guymer had a single -goal in a 5-4 win over Clarence Creek. Good defensive efforts were turned in by Natasha Peddle, Lindy McIvor, Melissa Cowan and Leslie Pawlowski. Nancy Teasdale scored twice while Leanne Muir and Smith had the. other goals for, Whitby in an 8-4 loss to Blackburn. Smith, Muir and Jennifer Cooper had the Whitby goals in anS8- 3 loss to Cumberland. Cooper exploded for five goals in a 9-5 win for Whitby over Beacon- sfield. Teasdale scored three goals *while *Jodi Sinden had the other goal. Angie Beer and Michelle Reader played net for Whitby in the tournamient. Whitby petite B team also took part in the tournament. Close gaines in tournament Whitby's Atom BB team travelled to Little Britain last weekend to participate in the loth annual Oddfellows tour- nament. Whitby played Ajax- Pickering Village in their first game and lost an excitlag contest 3-2 in sudden-death overtim e. Vance Stevenson and Brodie Richards were the goal. scorers. Stevenson, David Mit- cheç4 and Josh Ford had assists. In their second game, Whitby defeated Pickering 6-5. B.J. Prout was the scoring leader %Âdth three goals and two assists; Richards had one goal- and three assists, and the third meruber of the forward line, Mike Lefranier, added a goal.
