PAGE 10, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBR-UARY 4,1987 R egionpetiti.ons. Canada Post Durham Region wil petition Canada Post to reconsider the closing of rural post offices. The original motion, by Witby councrnlor Gerry Emm and Newcastle councillor Marie Hubbard, stated tbat the closing of rural post offices would have an 'astronomical' effect. But 'Hubbard later said the motion should read that the effect would be "devastating." Newcas- tle's councillor Diane Hamre also said tbe motion should be circulated to other municipalities as well as to the Association of Municipalities of Ontairio (AMO) and government Opposition leaders. "We're alI taxpayers - we've got to speak for our people," Hubbard said of the motion. Councillor Irv Harrel stated during discussion that tbe Columbus post office was closed down ini May of last year. He said the post office is important in rural communities since it is* w1iere residents find out about their fellow citizens. Legal inquiries wil11 cost more It's geing to cost more for legal inquiries processed by the public works department. Whitby, coundil has approved an increase of tbe-inquiry fee from $24 to $25 and a charge of $100 if the inquiry is of an "urgent nature." In 1986, 3,157 inquiries were processed by the department for a total of $73,719. The works depar- tment says urgent inquiries will have a higher cost because they disrupt those requests already being processed. The Town, however, will not encourage urgent requests.
