It la well known that Cadbury's sold the plant to William Neilson Ltd., who in turn intends to close the operation,, thereby putting approximately 400 Cidbury employees out of work. This la not an unusual occurrence by big business; taking over the competition. and putting them out of -business - this epigode being one of the more effective means of achieving this end. Unfortunately, it la not* management of Cadbury's that is hurt - it la the 400 employees that are given the shocking news that they will not longer have steady employment in the near future. When your are trying to support a family, this news can be devastating. In the end, a closure of thla type, affects each and everyone of us since it means. more Canadians become unemployed and bavingÉ, through no fault of their own, to' apply for unemployment insurance benefits; it leaves a modemn, efficient operating plant empty and unused. This doesn't appear to me to be proper business practice. This scenario truly demonstrates the need. for effective competition regulations, and for this reason, this government has already drafted and passed legisiation that will give consumers meaningful protection; protection for businesses, particularly small businesses from dominant firms that abuse their market power. This government intended, -b establishing the Canadian Competition Tribunal, to have and create an office that would solely review sales of this type. The tribunal is presently reviewing the Cadbury sale; the investigation was initiated on Jan. 14, when the announcement was made by William Neilson's Ltd., and is in the preliminary stages at the moment. College earns. award The Ontario Com- munity Newspaper Association bas given the Durham College "Chronicle'" its general excellence award as the top student newspaper among ail Ontario Colleges and Univer- sities. A special plaque will be presented to Bill Swan, the Chronicle's editor-in-chief at the annual convention of the newspaper association at the Westin'Hotel in Toronto, March 5, 6 and 7. This is the first time Durham College has won this award. Last year Durham placed third for advertising general excellence, and five years ago placed second for that category.
