WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1987 CHURCH ANNIVER SARY CONTINUES By JANET BROWNE Whitby's historic St. John's Anglican Church is now in the midst of its l40th birthday celebrations and mem- bers of the congregation are sparing no effort in making this year's an- niversary one'fthat will flot soon be forgotten. The celebrations ac- tually began last sum- mer, 140years since the historie church opened its doors to the first congregation. It has continued into 1987. Throughout this period, the congregation has participated in many social.i activities including a Fuii Day, a dinner party, at which approximately 80 people were in attendance and the customary outdoor service held on the church lawn in early sulnmer.. .1r0 commemorate this occasion, an anniver- sary hymn was com- posed by St. John's organist, Gem Fitch, along ýwith Hugh McKellar, and was per- formed at a recent Town council meeting. A frame copy of this hymn hangs on the wall of the municipal office, and it has been sung during services at varfious churches in Canada and parts of the United States.' Not ail the activities have been social in nature. Fundraising activities included an auction, an individual coin collec- tion by the children of the congregation, and a concert with Sharon, Lois and Bram which took place on Feb, 5. These three events atone have raised ap- proximately $5,500 for the cause. The rich history of St. John's, the oldest chur- ch in Whitby, dates back to 1841 when its first congregation was foun- ded by Rev. John Pen- tland. Construction of the limestone church began.in 1845, and it was open to the public on July 5, the following year. The church has gone through a series of changes and renovations, including the rebuilding of one of the spires after a lightening boit passed through it in 1872, and the. installation of a basement in 1897. The last word went to councillor Joe Bugeili who said: "It's nice to see one has developed in Mr. Roger's neigh- borhood." Bob Attersley said in- terest is still being shown in two more areas of town capable of housinghotels. One of those areas is at the northeast corner of Brock St. S. and the 401.- He would not divulge, the other location.
