But that picture could get a lot brighter by Oc- tober, 1987, with 187 private rentai apar- .tments and 194 non- profit apartment stil under construction in Town. These figures are con- tained in a report on housing in Town by the planning department. The CMHC is expec- ted to complete the next vacancy rate survey in~ April 1987. But apar- tment units now under construction are not ex- pected to be completed in time, so the Town will have to wait until the following October to find out if the number of units are meeting the demand. A demand that remains high. " ... the demand for apartment units is high throughout the entire "Golden Horsehoe" area due to declining unemployment, in- creased job creation, consumer confidence and immigration. These factors are ail at play in the Whitby area and CORRECTION In the A&P Flyers distributed by mail for week of Februar 9-14, theX,,oin Lamb Chops were incorrectly advertised at $2.29/lb. W. 668-6362 » CMHC expects the demand for rentai ac- commodation to remain strong," states the report. While the vacancy rate in Whitby remains low, s0 apparently does the need for assisted housing' Figures supplied by the Durham Regional Housing Authority show that there are currently 36 familles, 29 seniors, 4 developmentally han- dicapped and 7 physically handicapped on the authority's waiting list as of Dec. 31, 1986. "It must also be kept in mind that these figures do not represelit the total need for assisted housing as many persons and familles in need, do-not find their wayonto thèse lists for a variety of reason,"t states -the report. The report also shows that a total of 155 rent- geared-to-income units are expected to be com- pleted in 1987; 81 family units and 74 non-family units. "Although these figures may appear to be large, it should be noted that only 33 family and 75 non-family rent- geared-to-income units have been built in Whit- by sînce 1978. " The report indicates that council approved 413 housing lots in 1986 (this includes, singles, semis and links and 705 units were registered. The planning depar- tmnent anticipates that this shortfail will be overcome earlv in 1987. But while houses are continuing to be built in Whitby, the department is concerned with the lack of variety in size.. "Planning" staff is concerned with the lack of variety in lot sizes registered in 1986. Very few lots, including> semis, links- and townhouses, with- less than 50 feet of frontage have been approved or registered i1986." The department, however, expects this trend to reverse itself, due to the increase in house prices. and demand for- starter homes. Hospital name change officiai, Dr. J.O.
