Whtby got outstan- ding goaltending from Greg Kawa to defeat Pembroke 2-1 in the opening game of the 12- teain tournament. But Pembroke came out on top 3-2 when* the two teains met again in the final. "We did everything, but put thepuck in," said -coach' -Charlie Washer of the final in which ýVhitby sWarmed the opposition net to score the tying goal. Pe mbroke led 2-1 af- ter the first and 3-2 after the second, then held on in the third to dlaim the championship. Peter Defina and Chad Har- vey had the Whitby goals. Defina scored both Whitby goals in the 2-1 opener.' Kawa was named outstanding player. Bilan Duff set Up both Defina goals, with Brent Knowles and Kevin Washer also get- ting assists. Whitby lost 3-0 to Almonte in the second gaine of the tour- nament. Almonte led 1-0 until the last minute of the gaine wben two in- surance goals sealed the win. Mike Mitchell was solid in net for Whitby. Harvey, Defina, Duff, Jason Gurd and Mike Thomn scored for Whitby in a 5-3 win over Nepean that gave Whitby a te for first in their six- teain division with Pemnbroke. Whitby was awarded first because of the earlier victory over Pembroke. In the semi-final, Whitby came back froin a 2-0 deficit against a big, rough Brockville squad and won 6-4. Washer described the Brockville style as in- timidating but un- disciplined, allowing Whitby to pull out the victory. Gurd, Defina, Thomn, Harvey, Chris Vanclief and Mike Garton scored for Whitby. Whitby then the final again broke on only 40 rest. Washer defencemen iit Pem- Mead, John Van- derheyden, Jamie Collins, Rob Dawson and Washer for his team's fine showing. Minor atoms second in Kingston. Brooklin - Whitby minor atoins finished second in Kingston's Mike Dee Menorial tournament recently. Whitby won three consecutive gaines, defeating Mississauga North Stars 5-1, North York's Goulding Park 7- 1 and Newnarket 3-1 to qualify for the chain- pionship match against Nepean, a strongAA team fron Ottawa. Whitby lost to Nepean 7-3, to finish second in the minor atoin diviision. Each teain member received a, con- memorative finalist trophy. In the Mississauga gaine, Matt Muir scored three goals on assists fron Paul Dillon, Jin Brown,, Tirn Chai and Mike Wye. Defenceman Craig Talent scored a goal on an assist froin Dillon. Wayne Pruneau scored the fifth goal unassisted. Coaches Brian Dillon and Jini Young felt the second gaine against Goulding Park was a good example of the of- fensive and defensive cohesion their boys exhîbited -throughout the tournament. Pruneau gained three goals, on assists froin Muir, Brown, Andre Marois, Mike Hogan and Derek 'Young. Dillon scored two goals assisted by MUir, Jeff Montaigue, and Pruneau. Montaigue and Muir each scored a goal on assists fron Pruneau and Dillon respectively. Derek Young scored on assists froni Marois and Paul Brooks. The third gaine against Newmarket was a dloser match. Pruneau scored an unassisted goal. Then Marois scored on assists from. Montaigue and Muir. Dillon scored the third goal on assists froin Pruneau and Young. The championship gaine against Nepean proved to be Whitby's toughest of the tour- nament. Pruneau scored *two out of three goals for Whîtby. on assists first fron Brooks and Dillon, then from Marois and Muir. Jin Brown put . in the third unassisted goal fron the blue line. Whitby's defencemen -Mike- Hogan, Mike Wye, Jon Racicot and Craig Talent -and goaltenders Jamie Hogel and Stephen St. Amand were strong throughout the tour- nament.
