Curnow pays visit I ReviewM FROM PAGE 19 stant tromp- up and down steps to enter and exit the stage, it serves as a fine introduction to the main characters. We are immediately introduced to Algernon Moncrieff and John Worthing. Rod Carley's por- trayal of Algernon, an outspoken, rather ec- centric bachelor, is a good contrast to Gerry Brooks who plays John, also a bachelor who wants nothing more than to marry Gwen- dolyn Fairfax. Fairfax is brought admirably through the play by Jane Edmon- dson who is also given -credit as costume co- ordinator. Were it not for Norma Symes' portrayal " of lady Bracknell, Ed- mondson would be the class of the play. Symes, in her first role for the WLT, is per- fect as the stuffy, often p.m.,'he will be suppor- ted by guest conductor Ian Watkinson, vocal soloist Robert Young, trombone soloist Nor- man Ritson, the Whitby Youth Concert Band and the massed choirs of Oshawa area churches. "He is (Curnow) widely known and respected throughout Salvation Army circles around the world," says. Bill Holloway of the Oshawa Temple Corps. vofplay outspoxen, Bracknell. While most of her. dialogue is Wilde's view on Victorian society, Symes handles the task with just the right amount of pom- pousness. Also important to this deceptive love story, is Algernon's love in- terest, Cecily Cardew, John Worthing's ward. Monique Essegern brings the seemingly naive Cardew to life. Providing good sup- port in a dual role is Gerry Brooks as Lane, the man servant to Algernon and Merrinan and as the butler to Wor- thing. His facial expressions often receive the hear- tiest laughs. The play continues at the Whitby Little Theatre this weekend with shows beginning at 8p.m. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Mid- dleton's. Composer James Curnow, from Atlanta, Georgia, will be a guest of the' Salvation Army Oshawa Temple lgand this Saturday, Feb. 21 at O'Neill Collegiate In- stitute, Oshawa. Curnow, a top com- poser of music for schools and colleges in the United States, will also be at Henry Street High School in Whitby on Friday. At the Oshawa con- cert, to begin at 7:30 Wrestling club year old FROM PAGE 17 This more agressive style, con- trary to popular belief, does.not lead to excessive injuries, claims Smith. "More football players in university get hurt than wrestlers. If you're prepared to take it, it's not that physical." A good way to avoid injury is to stretch, which Smith has his wrestlers do before and during practice. Conditioning, also vital to being a good wrestler, is handled through various games involving different types of endurance. Conditioning is essential, because wrestlers do not have teammates to fall back on. "Wrestling is one-on-one" says Smith. If you lose, there is no one to blame but yourself. It's not a team sport." "But," he adds, "if you don't have a team, you don't have a sport." Because wrestling is an in- dividual sport, Smith sits down with each member of the club and maps out realistic goals. Last year, one member of the club, made it to the provincial tournament and came fourth. Wrestling is at a high com- petitive level in Durham Region because in high school, the sport is taken very seriously. "We have had some ranked in the world," says Smith. Members of-WOWO will be in a tournament at Col. J.E. Farewell School this Wednesday, 4-8:30 p.m.
