Club members swim to victory Several members of the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club had first-place finishes in a recent tri-meet with the Orillia and Pickering swim clubs in Orillia. Whitby's girls 13 and over teamn had eight firsts; Janice Currie won the 100 fly, 200 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Michelle Primeau won the 200 freestyle and Charissa Morrice won the 200 fly. Currie and Leswick also had two second-place finishes each. Chris Donnelly was first in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle while Aaron Bradrey was first in the 200 fly for boys 13 and over. Doninelly also had two seconds. Scott Donnelly was first in the 200 individual medley for boys il and 12. He and James Armitage also had second-place finishes. Sandy Mark raced to four wins in boys 9 and 10 events. Mark won the 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle and was also second in the 50.fly. Neil Balan won the 50 fly and'had four seconds, ah in races, won by Mark. -Andrew Dowson won the 100 individual medley. Molly Morrice matched Marks' performance with four wins and a second. She captured the 200 in- dividual medley,- 50 fly, 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle for girls 9 and 10. Suzanne Dainty won thé 100 backstroke and was second in two other races. For boys 8 and under, the.Whitby club's Sandy Henderson swam to victory in the 100 individual medley, 25 fly and 50 freestyle and was second and third in other even- ts. Leslie Dowson won the 200 in- dividual medley and picked up a second and two thirds for girls 8 and under. Debra Thatcher had a second and a third. The cross-Canada Olympic torch relay for the Winter Games in Calgary will travel through Whitby on Dec. 21. Petro Canada, organizer of the relay aspect of -the Games, is now accepting applications for torch- bearers for the 18,000-km trip over 88 days. Dec. 21 will be the 35th day, and the torch will move from Omemee, just west of Peterborough, to Pickering during that day. Runners will take Hwy 2 through Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering. A total of 83 runners will carry the torch .on that stage -of the odyssey. Petro Canada will hold draws May 5 to il in Toronto and Calgary to determine runners, who will be residents of the daily route area. The torch has been designed to resemble the Calgary Tower. Abobut 250 torches, with aluminum bowls and maple wood handles, will be made. Each will weigh 1.5 kg. The relay will be a "pavement pounding proposition," according to Petro Canada. The exception will be kiloMetres designated for snowmobiles, snowshoes, cross country skis and dogsleds. Good« upper armn strength is required, as each runner will hold the torch aloft for an average of one kilometre. Specially trained and conditioned runners will carry the torch during non-daylight hours. During daylight hours, escorts will be provided for torchbearerS. It is expected that the torch will be carried in temperatures as cold as minus 40 degrees centigrade, and into 'winds of up to 60 km/hr. A fuel was developed to keep the flame going and highly visible for 45 minutes. The Olympic flame will leave St. John's, Newfoundland on Nov. 17, 1987 and reach Calgary, Feb. 13, 1988. Torchbearers will also be- able to keep Olympie track.suits given for the run. There is no cost to suc- cessful applicants. Belles: ringette champs Whitby Belles finished the ringet- te season as league champions with two wins last week. Mary Lou Spencer scored four goals and Susan Marshall had the other in a 5-1 win over Warkworth at the Brooklin arena Feb. 15. Paula Barrack scored seven goals as Whitby downed Ajax 13-4 Feb. 16. Spencer scored three goals, Tammy Bates had two goals and three assists and Rita Bourke had a goal and two assists. Susan Marshall had five assists and Joanne Dewit, four. The belles had il wins, two ties and only two losses to take first place in the league. They began playoffs on Sunday with a 6-4 loss to Markharn. Barrack scored three times and Spencer once. Juveniles bounced FROM PAGE 15 league championship. A 4-3 loss to Richmond 1*il in overtime Feb. il bounced the Whit- by juvenile hockey team from the all-Ontario playoffs. Danny Love was outstanding both on offence and defence for Whitby, which dropped the best-of- five series in three straight gamnes. Whitby began a best-of-five series with Markham on Sunday in York-Simncoe-Durham league playoffs. The winner will meet Pickering in the league final. LOSSA at Anderson The Anderson junior girls volleyball team w ill be hosting this year's LOSSA tournamient at their school today Feb. 25. .Meanwhile Anderson and Henry midget and senior girls' volleyball teams are preparing for LOSSA com- petition being held in Ajax this week.
