AGE 18, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WIELNESDLAY, FER1JrUJ31X25, UV -Local band- has fun with rock By MIKE JOHNSTON The first major test for a new Whitby rock group called The Clique,» will be Thursday, March 12 at. the Upper Lip in Oshawa when the band opens for Shark Graffiti. Together for only four weeks, the band is comprised of Mark MacLeod, 16, drums; Paul French, 17, guitar and vocals, Leigh Kemp, 17, bass and keyboards and Todd Williamson, 16, guitars. MacLeod and Kemp are students at Anderson Collegiate while French and Williamson attend Henry. The four attempt to rehearse at least twice a week, but lack of rehearsal space and sehool work often btes into that time. "We rehearse in basements, whenever we find the time," says French. At present, the band's act includes 60 per cent cover material and 40 per cent original music with French and Kemp writing the songs. Their cover material goes from the Kinks to Georgia Satellites. French sees the band remaining together for some time because they are close friençis. "There is a qhemistry between us, 'we get along as friends as well as musicians," says Kemp. "We're young guys and people think we can't be serious, but we can,"l .Proof that their music can be serious, is an original song entitled You Don't Know, a story about the end of a reationship, that the group members pickedas their favorite original. On the other hand, they also believe that music has to be fun. If it wasn't fun, I'd get out," says French. This fun side is reflected in what, the band cails their slogan - 'Rock and Roll with a Capital P, P for Party.' " It means good music, good time, " says French. The band members aren't intoo much of a hurry to make music their lifelong careers.1 "We're young so we have time, " he says. Meanwhile the band members await their first 'major' ap- pearance March' 12. "We're Iooking forward to it. This will be our first time in front of a crowd where we don't know anyone," says French. nrol The Clique THE CLIQUE band members are (1-r) Williamson and Leigh Kemp.
