Each of the four teams received gold medals for their performances at the Feb. 21 event. "To celebrate, we're _going to 'Storybook land' theme of carnival "Storybook Land" will be the theme of this year's Whitby Figure Skating Club carnival to be held this Saturday, March 7, 3:30 to 6 p.m. at Iroquois Park arena. The junior and novice teams will now represent Eastern Ontario at the Canadian finals on March 28 and 29 in Laval, Quebec. "The competition is getting quite stiff now," states Ice Crystals coach Cathy Dalton," "but we still have four weeks to prepare before the finals." If the teams continue to prevail in their divisions and win the finals, this will mark the third consecutive year. the teams have held the Canadian championship title. "Everybody is out to beat us now," explains Dalton. "There is a lot of rivalry between the teams, and it's difficult to stay one step ahead of everybody else." In the' following months, the skaters will participate in the Whitby Figure Skating Club car- nival on Mar. 7 at Iroquois Park. Other carnivals held by neigh- boring clubs in Little Britain and East York will also be attended by the skaters. LISA BLAND of the Anderson CVI on. Free Press photo Insufficient ice time forces BWMHA to turn away players THE WHITBY KIITCHI-SAI CLUB will host a tour- nament on March 7 at the Henry St. High School from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Clubs from Ontario, Quebec and Win- nipeg will be competing. Shown preparing for the tournament is Stephanie Kirkby, demonstrating a throw on Maria Kristans. A lack of ice time during the 1986- 87 hockey season has forced the Brooklin Whitby Minor Hockey Association to eliminate or scale down many of the programs plan- ned for players. In fact, the problem was so bad, each player had an average of just more than one hour a week on the ice. The association is trying to get players two hours per week on the ice - one hour of practice and one hour of game time. "We had to turn down 12 kids this year. Even turning down one is bad," says Dave Wall, vice president of the house league. The association managed to squeeze in one hour for a goalten- ding clinic and one hour for a body checking clinic but had to cancel a trainers' clinic and a coaching clinic. Insufficient ice in Whitby-has not only hurt house league play but has forced select teams to go outside the community for ice time. The teams have had to pay for ice time themselves, Wall points out. The select teams usually go to the Art Thompson Arena in Pickering but this year the arena expanded its men's league, cutting ice time for the select players in half. There are currently 43 teams with 710 players in house league. While the number of players is ex- pected to grow by 80 to 100 next season, a solution to the problem is currently underway. The new arena at Iroquois Park is expected to be completed by the fail of 1987. Wall says the Town beat the association to the punch by one week, when it sent out a letter asking how much additional ice time the association will need. Similar letters have been sent to the ringette association and the Whitby Figure I5aßting club. This season, Wall says the association has operated with 72-73 hours of ice time a week. For next Henry Streel High School won a dual between Whitby secondary schools in the LOSSA junior girls volleyball championship last week. John Soehner, assistant to Henry coach Tom Buchanan, says Henry and Anderson CVI could again face each other in the finals of the Durham-York competition this week in Ajax. The LOSSA finals were held last week at Anderson CVI. Henry, un- defeated during the regular season, emerged first in round-robin play with seven wins and three losses in the five matches played by each teani. -- season, they have requested 106 hours a week. The championship was the second for Henry as the junior girls volleyball team also earned the AA title for Durham Region. Both teams played Wednesday this week in Ajax for the Durham-York titles. The Henry seniors had a 9-1 record to finish first in the round- robin playdown at LOSSA. In thé final, Henry dropped the first game 15-10 to Brock but then dominated to win the next two games by scores of 15-4 and 15-6. "They all played quite well," Jay Smith said of her players she has coached since the midget level. "I figured we had a chance." Henry finished second during the regular schedule behind Pickering. But Pickering had 'a bad day' at LOSSA, said Smith. Henry and Brock faced the top two York teams this week. The DYSSA winner goes on to the On- tario championships in Sarnia next week. Anderson and Pickering High School tied for second with 6-4 records, but Anderson got the nod with a higher point spread. In the semi-final, Henry was trailing 11-4 in the first game but roared back behind the play of An- drea Enwright and Angie Kane to down Pickering 16-14. Henry mar- ched to a 15-4 win in the second game. Henry pvercame the 'high- spirited Anderson squad by iden- tical scores of.15-11 in the final.
