Carnegie in quilt final Alice Carnegie of Brooklin was one of 13 finalists in the ninth an- nual Canada Packers quilt com- petition held recently in Toronto during theannual convention of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. The 13 finalists' quilts were selec- ted from approximately 234 win- ners at local agricultural societyf fairs across Ontario where ap- proxiiately 4,000 quilts had been entered. This year's championship quilt was quilted by Joanne O'Leary of Hamilton. She received a prize cheque for $800 from Canada Packers Inc. CAPE project receives grant The Durham Region Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence. has received a grant of $50,000 from. the Province for its one-year Child Abuse Protocols and Education (CAPE) project. The grant enabled the council to hire Nikita A. Crook to co-ordinaate the project, support the develop- ment of protocols, and implement public and professional education programs in the region. Marilyn MacIntosh, who chairs the 30-member council explained that protocols are "mutually agreed upon procedures to be used by agencies in Durham in reporting and investigating child abuse and child sexual abuse." Members of the council include Inspector Bob Brown of Durham Regional Police; Dr. Anton de. Swaaf, executive director of Family and Children's Services and representatives from school boards, hospitals, and various social agencies. Crook sees • her function as "facilitating the council and its committees in writing protocols and developing effective education programs." She welcomes input from council members and the community as she begins her work on this project. As of mid-February, Crook will be working out of an office in the YMCA's Parent and Child Enrich- ment Centre (PACE) i Pickering. Gregory new administrator David Gregory of Whitby is the new district administrator for the Durham branch of the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Gregory, a member of the Whitby Lions Club, had previously worked in administration for Lake Joseph Centre. He recently looked after corporate accounts for the United Way and has previously served on the Red Cross board of directors. He has worked with the CNIB organization for 12years. -The annual advisory board meeting of the Durham branch will be held on Monday, March 9, 6:45 p.m., at Columbus Old Fellows Hall.
