The first phase of streetscape improvements began last spring lntroducing interlocking brick to the sidewalks,'new trees and a 96 space parking lot on Perry Street. The final phase of tis beautifîcation .process Will culminate i the spring when Brock Street north and Dundas Street will receive the same treatment. To enhance 'these physical im- provements the B.I.A. acquired hanging floral baskets and planter barrels which promise a colourful and beautiful show this spring. Last summer Downtown Whitby was selected as a 'Main Street' community under the Heritage Canada Foundation because the downtown has retained a vintage Main Street and because of the potential it exemplifies. At the end of March 'Heritage Canada will be seniding its "Resource Team" (made up of experts in Downtown Revitalization) to help identify its strengths and help work on a course of action for the goals the downtown As a resuit of the many positive things that have been occurring li downtown, new commercial development is occurring at a rapid pace to meet the demand. This reinforces that the downtown is in- deed becomlng a vibrant commer- cial area. Many of the niew developments display quaint, Vic- torian style architecture to blend i with the surrounding environmeni. The developers of these new com- mercial units have had no problems in filling a good majority of the new spaces being created as the inquiries from new upseale, specialty retailers bas been steady. This icreasing healthy climate combied with plans the B.I.A. has this year for the downtown such as; an architectural assistance program for landiords to improve their facades; many more fun promotional days; beautification projects and much more proves that 'downtown Whitby is quickly becoming the place to be.
