Now, the store is stalked with merchandise ranging from cookies to mouthwash, and deli meats are available. A lifetime Whitby resident, she has watched the town grow and expand for close to a century, and she bas mixed feelings about the Whitby of today. I'There are so many people here now. I go downtown and don't recognize anybody. It's flot like it used to be. But you like to see things booming, and not dead like it was in the 30's. Boy, was it dead!1" The store is now being run by Bernard Turansky, one of her three sons. She also has a daughter who lives in Whitby. "My kids always say, 'Is having this store the only thing you like?' I say, 'yes', that's how I got it in the first place. There's nothing else I would rather do." With certain magazines, Natoli. says, "It's amazing the kinds of magazines people are buying. You think, who the heck will buy these? Then you find out that they really do seli. " Besides the enormous variety of magazines, the 1,370-sq. ft. store also seils paperbacks, newspapers, comics, crossword puzzles, how-to cassettes, cigarettes and candies. 11 can't believe this is hap- pening," says Natoli, "We've had an excellent response since the store opened on Feb. 24. More and morepeople are hearing about us, coming in, and giving us good compliments." One customer commented that she usually had . to go to Toronto to find her favorite magazine, so it was great to have this store in Whitby. The magazines ail vary in price.
