Makita - tools for the trade Expansion of the company plant in Whitby is a good indicator of the growth enjoyed by Makita Power Tools Canada Ltd. The company purchased an em- pty building on Forbes Street and opened during the fall of 1982. The Whitby operation, with ap- proximately 85 employees, has just doubled in size with the recent completion of a 50,000 sq. ft. ad- dition. A regional sales of- fice/warehouse in Richmond, B.C., is the Japan-based . company's other Canadian location. Makita has several branches in the United States, including a large, new production facility near Atlanta, Georgia. Roy Atkinson, General Manager of Finance and Administration in Whitby, says that Makita has quadrupled its sales during the five years since moving to the Whitby location. "Even with inflation, that's significant growth", says Atkinson, "It's North America where Makita's growth is now. Sales in North America and Brazil account for 34 percent of Makita's total sales world-wide. Mr. Atkinson says Makita began building power tools for tradesmen and professionals, but also decided to enter the "do-it-yourself" market, two or three years ago. He says that the tools have' gained a reputation for being durable and well-built, since they were first designed for professional use. The Whitby plant assembles seven different types of power tools, including disc grinders, cir- cular saws, drills and sanders. With a product line consisting of such a large and growing variety of tools, the expansion has provided needed warehouse space. The Whitby plant employment makes up about half of the total Makita work-force in Canada. Other employees working in the Richmond, B.C. location and here in Whitby, operate under the direc- tion of Richard Ingram, General Manager of Sales and Marketing and Hero Yamaguchi, President of Makita Canada.
