The idea was the brainchild of Patti Arnold, a Gr. 12 student at the school, who, along with two other students, shared her own memories of a stay in Mexico. Lupe Martinez, from just north of Mexico, was another guest. Now an Ontario representative for the United Farm Workers of America, led by Caesar Chavez, Martinez sought support for a union boycott of pesticides used in the grape- growing industry in his home state of California. He told students he was fired from his job in a vineyard for protesting against pesticides. A labor law had been passed in 1975 to. protect farmworkers' rights but Martinez says that protection was later lifted, to the benefit. of the vineyard's corporate owners. The union says 300,000 workers are poisoned by pesticides each year in the U.S. Martinez says eight million pounds eof pesticides are used on grapes each year. A film, "The Wrath of Grapes," was also shown, part of a presen- tation against what Martinez calls a "chemical time bomb." He says the.corporate owners will act if the boycott receives con- sumer group. "They do listen, they will listen, but it depends on the consumer," he said of owners. The boycott began in 1985. Chavez will visit various cities in Canada June 10 to 18 to seek boycott support. A demon- stration has been planned in Toron- to April 25 and Martinez asked for Denis O'Connor support. "Viva boycott!" made up the chant he led, while the youngest member of his family proved to be a big hit among students. Norah Stoner, Pickering coun- cillor and Liberal candidate for the provincial riding of Durham West, discussed environmental pollution and nuclear fear later during the fast, on Saturday. Father Bernard Canning spoke to begin the fast on Friday at 4 p.m. Students hoped to raise $3,000 toward the $7.6 million goal by all dioceses for Share Life. She was born in Whitby, daughter of John Ridgley and Phoebe Westgarth. She married Earl Dilling in November, 1947. She was 'à member of All Saints Anglican Church, Afternoon Guild, Whitby Historical Society, Whitby Seniors and Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, children Cyndy and Kelly and grandchildren Katie, Maggie and James. She was predeceased by brother Drury and sisters Clara and Louise. The funeral service was held March 7, conducted by Rev. Rod Barlow, at the W.C. Town Funeral Home. Interment at Mount Lawn Cemetery. MONA PEARL DOWNEY Mona Pearl Downey of 315 Colborne St., Whitby, died at Whit- by General Hospital on March 28, 1987. She was in her 70th year. She was born on April 27, 1916, in Bowmanville, daughter of Elmer and Florence (Sheppard) Dickin- son. She married Edward Watson Downey in 1940. She was a receiver at Croven Electrons Ltd. for 25 years and a member of the United Church. Mrs. Downey lived in Whitby for 38 years. She is survived by son Eric and daughter-in-law Linda of Lindsay, daughter Dianne and son-in-law Bruce of Whitby and daughter Bar- bara and son-in-law Eugene Kye of Whitby. Also survived by gran- dchildren Kelly, Julie, Gary, Carla, Lee-Anne, Kevin , Lisa and Laura, brother Wilbur of Port Hope and sister Elma (Mrs. Bennett) of Oshawa. The funeral was held Tuesday, March 31 at the Town Funeral Home, Whitby, with Rev. Brian Gee. FRANKLIN MURRAY MILLER Franklin Murray Miller of 610 Walnut St., Whitby, died on March 28, 1987, at Whitby General Hospital. He was in his 69th year. He was born in Fenelon Falls on April 24, 1918, son of Oren and Ruby (Deyman) Miller. He married Robinette on Sep- tember 7, 1943. Mr. Miller lived in Whitby for the past 42 years. He was a hospital worker. Survived by his wife, daughters Mary (Mrs. McIntyre), Shirley and Margaret Miller and son George. Also survived by brothers Edward, Marvin, Howie and sister Orlie (Mrs. Bryahs). The funeral was held from the W.C. Town Funeral Home on Mar- ch 30, 1987, with Rev. J. McClure.
