That being the case Anderson rugby coach Ron Pither has a lot of work to do with his senior squad this year if they are to win their fair share of games. Last week's match up between Anderson and York Mills saw the home team Raiders go down to a humbling 12 - 3 defeat. During the first ten minutes of the game, York Mills took the lead with a converted try. It was a lead they did not relinquish. Anderson's kicker, Matt Harris, missed on his first penalty kick attempt. The kick was disputed by several players who felt it had gone between the pipes. Patience prevailed and Harris made good on his next kick attempt in the second half to narrow the score to 6-3. York Mills, however, had other ideas and rallied for two good penalty kicks of their own to end the game with a 12-3 score. Pither used his second string players during the first half of the game, but the lads from Anderson have to "get their act together" if they want to stay out of the cellar this year. They will be playing another exhibition game, this time against the mighty Oakville Trafalgar team, this week, and will hopefully be ready for their season opener against the Dunbarton Spartans on Monday, April 27. Whitby girl wins Canadian event The future looiks promising for Corinne Hayes. At age 13, the Kempo Karate and Fitness Club student had already ranked fifth in women's black belt karate in Canada in 1986. And on April 11, she took first in the Canadian Internationals com- petition inLondon, Ont. "To be number one," is the goal .f Hayes, the youngest female black belt in Canada. "She's got a good future if she stays at it," says father Raymond Hayes, a karate instructor for 10 years. Corinne was second last year at the Canadian open held in August at the Kempo location on Dundas St. W. in Whitby. First was Dagmar White, 27, of Buffalo, described by Corinne as "tough." One match with White left Corin- ne with an injured spleen. She's recovered nicely and now works out three hours a day, six days a week - the usual routine for one who aspires to greater heights. Corinne, a Gr. 8 student at St. John the Evangelist separate school in Whitby, won the Durham Invitation April 5. She studies un- der the "Menkyo" ("from the mind") Kempo system.
