Free Press photo Sports honors June 3 Whitby will honor its finest athletes of 1986 on June 3 at the an- nual sports recognition awards night to be held at Heydenshore Pavilion. The parks and recreation depar- tment has requested from the various sports organizations and clubs in town the names of any in- dividuals or teams who have won provincial or national champion- ships in 1986. The names of any outstanding volunteers in these organizations are also desired by the department. The department also wants more information concerning eligible athletes who are not represented by a community group. About 200 athletes are expected at the event which commences at 7 p.m. Because of the 'Blue Jay' theme of the evening, a special visit from the Jays' mascot, B.J. Bird, has been arranged, and memories of the 1985 baseball season will be highlighted. Barnes 3rd in chess Gordon Barnes of Whitby has four wins, a tie and a loss to hold down third place just past the half- way point of the area chess playdowns. Barnes has a Chess Federation of Canada rating of 1774 (high class B). He trails Zbynek Skubnik of West Hill, who has a 5-1 record and a 1914 rating, and Anthony Cheron of Ajax, who as the same record as Barnes but a higher 1914 rating. Six players have competed in the 10-game round-robin, although one, James Holden of Oshawa, now in fourth behind Barnes, is dropping out because of job demands as a chartered accountant. The 1985-86 champion, Michael Szilagyi of Whitby, has been unable to defend his title, also because of job demands. Don't Paint it! SEAL IT!
