PAGE 4, -WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 13,1987 Harbor has too miany ge ese Whitby harbor bas an overabun- dance of Canada geese. Acting on a request from the Town, a representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources in- vestigated the problem and on two visits to the harbor area, Barry Snider estimated 300 to 400 geese were present as well as large num- bers of mallard ducks and several Inmute swans. "The harbor area is an excellent ar ea for geese," William Forman, district manager for the ministry wrote to the Town. "There is open water all year, and ýnesting habitat in the overgrown areas on either side of the harbor. "From tallcing, to some of the people that were out watching the waterfowl, it was obvious that the waterfowl are an important attrac- tion to people in the area. On the other hand, the geese can destroy lawns and goose feces can be a problem- on. docks, tables and walkways." * The Town initiated the in- vestigation after receiving dom- plaints from boaters and people using the soccer fields. F!orman suggested two options to solve the problem. One is to move the geese, although he admits that would be expensive, and in the end, since the area is so attractive to geese, they may return. The other solution is posting signs asking people not to feed the birds. Forman says that although the geese do not require feedîng they are attracted by the handouts. The matter is currently before the Town's operations committee.
