The lads from Anderson came out flying and totally controlled play during the firSt haif, building up a 16-O score. At the beginning of the second haif, Brock pushed for what was to be their only try of the match, but it was a inatter of too littie, too late. The Canmington team bas talent but was kept at bay by a strong Ander- son defense which combined with an overpowering scrtum team. The contract, approved by management committee and passed by coundil, has given4~he workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1785, a four per cent wage increase retroactive to January 1987, followed by a 4.5 per cent increase starting next January 1. Regional personnel director Terry Stevens admitted the negotiations were difficuit for both sides. He said he was "quite sure" everyone involved wanted to see the matter "draw to a satisfactory conclusion." Hie said the efforts of the mediation officer were greatly appreciated and doubted things would have reached the ending it did without bis tenacity. "'There were a few things that required more study," said Stevens "But it was agreed by both sides that we would meet over the next months to give the items a dloser look." Stevens indicated that because the most important elements of the contract had been ironed out, neither side wanted to hold up the sigming of the contract while the other items were sorted out. Regional workers are responsible for repairing Durham's roads and maintaining the water and sewage plants. They had been without a contract since last December. Union president Duncan Sedgeman had stated previously that bis union was not happy with the agreement even though it bad been recommended and accepted by the members. The workers earned between $11.46 and $14.65 an hour prior to the new contract and were initially seeking a 5.5 per cent increase for the first year.
