However, he can only work on the tables during the weekends. During the week, he attends Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, majoring in business. And the winner is....Leslie M. MeFarlane Public School. That's the new name for Whitby Senior Public Schol, to be conver- ted into a kindergarten through Gr. 8 facility effective this September. Last March, a letter was sent home with students' at Whitby Senior and F.M. Heard, R.A. Hut- chison, R.A. Sennett and Palmer- ston Public Schools who will be at- tending the school in the fall. Part of his advertising campaign is a Volkswagen which he drives back and forth to Toronto. The car has one of the tables mounted on the roof. "People are always staring at it," says Stachow, who will have a stall at the upcoming Brooklin Spring Fair. Some of the tables can also be viewed at the Myrtle Variety store. A further four submissions .were received too late to be con- sidered by the Committee in charge of the name search. Leslie M. McFarlane was born in 1902 and came to Whitby in 1936. His children attended King Street School (now R.A. Sennett). Mc- Farlane was chairman of the Whit- by Board of Education until 1967 and chairman of Whitby Library Board. He was instrumental in acquiring the former Town Hall for the new library and gave his time freely to speak to hundreds of children at the request of school principals in Whitby. McFarlane wrote the Hardy Boys books under the pen name of Franklin W. Dixon. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1965 for his work with the National Film Board. He received the best playwright award by Liberty Magazine in 1960 and won major screenwriting awards in London and Venice. McFarlane authored many other children's books including "Last of the Great Picnics" and "McGonigle Scores." McFarlane's grandchildren now attend schools in Whitby. Other names suggested for the school were Garden Street P.S., Donald A. Wilson P.S., Dr. Charles F. McGillivray P.S., Anne Otten- brite P.S., John R. Frost P.S., Mildred E. Pascoe P.S. and Whitby P.S.
