The 10w 35 scorers after four rounds of golf at Thunderbird golf Course in Ashburn will receive their Canadian tour cards. Qualifying got underway on Monday, with the field pared down to the low 70's after the second round on Tuesday. The third and fourth rounds will be played Wednesday and Thur- sday, with the Io w 35, attending an educational program on Friday. "There is more to being a golf professional than hitting the bal and getting Iow scores," said Bob Beauchemin, executive director ot the TPD. The program will teach the 35 10w to handie, among other things, sponsors and the media. "You neyer know, we may be watching the 1995 U.S. Open cham- pion here this week," said Beauchemin at a Thunderbird press conference last Wednesday. .The winner of the tournament will receive $1,000. The remaining $7,000 in prize money wiIl be divided among the remaining 34 players. The Canadian tour card not only gives the golfers the right to play on the Canadian Tour, but the TPD has arranged for the golfers to play in Australian, South African and Asian tour events without qualifying. There will be 10 events on the Canadian Open, totalling more than $700,000 in prize money. Beauchemin said the TPD does not actively promote the sehool or the tour in writing. That, said Beauchemin, is "done by the players themselves. " 0f the 144 man field, 100 are coming up from the United States. The remaining four are from Japan, Fiji, France and Tobago. The United States contingent in- cludes 33 from California and a number of state champions and winners on mini-tour events*. Beauchemin called the 40-man Canadian field consistent with last year. Last year 12 Americans qualified for the tour. Thirteen Canadians qualified. This is the l3th year the TPD school is being held at Thunderbird. Spectators are welcome.
