The team, composed of Whitby and Ajax -players, started the season with a 1-0 loas to Pickering but has since gone undefeated to Win both LOSSA and DYSSAA. Liz Aruta, an outstandlng striker who is only midget age, and Margot Jelliman provide the offence for the otherwise strong defensive team . Aruta seored a header on a fine cross from Jeiliman for the winning goal'against Dunbarton in LOSSA semi-final action May 21. Gunning for a!gold medal that is. The 24-year-old bas been a member of the national rifle team for the past seven years, specializing in sbooting prone and is now in Zurich, Switzerland competing in the Swiss World Invitational meet. Spratley is one of nine members on the Canadian National team who will be competi ng' in four different categories against other national teams from around the world,. According to Spratley, the American, Soviet, German and home Swiss teama will be the ones to watcb during the comfpetition. "The Americans are always strong as are tbe Russians," said Spratley, "but the Germâns are very hot now and the home-country Swiss are not to be counted out eitber." Spratley said this meet is of particular impor- tance as due to changes in the Olympic rules, anyone wbo does not qualify in the Swiss meet will not have a chance to enter the Olympie trials to qualify for the 1988 Summer Olympica to be held in Korea. Spratley is recognized as one of the best in the world in bis chosen event winning the gold modal at the British Invitational in Bisley, England last summer. He became interested in shooting wbile a student at Pickering High School wbere he ser- ved as a student and instructor in their cadet corp for four years. He la presently a management trainee with Marks and Spencer and is posted in their Oshawa branch. Spratley bas been fortunate to have a coporate sponsor up until this year to assiat him witb the expenses incurred travelling to various inter- national competitions. With no major sponsor behind hlm, it appeared for a wbile that he would not be able to attend the Swiss event. But the village of Brooklin rallied behind him. Winchester Golf Course, Northern Water- proofing, Wilson Auto, Joe's Pizzeria, Vailes Fruit Market, Brooklin Animal Hospital, Short's Pharmacy, Cashway Lumber and Gary Young' Plumbing all kicked in a little to help pay the freigbt. "Wiltbout their belp, I wouldn't have been able to compete...it's that simple," said Spratley, "I'm hoping to get a corporate sponsor when I get back (from Switzerland) but that wouldnt have helped me get there ... the people were just great.
