PAGE 4A, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 1987_ Whitby one of lowest rated insurance areas:'agent By MIKE JOHNSTON The Town of. Whitby is one of the lowest rated areas in Ontario for automhobile insurance,'according to o ne local insurance agent. "Insurance rates in Whitby are 20) per cent cheaper than the* rates in Toronto,'$ says Peter Dilello. He estimates the averae in- surancei rate for a two-car family in Whitby is $840 -$850 a year. Those rates, he says, are based on statistics kept by insurancle companies. When approachiûig an.agent Or a company for insurance, a number of factors are taken, into con- sideration, says Dilello. They include age and sex of the driver, type of car, driver's record, driver's. experience and what the car wiIl be used for. *-*"',*- Agamn,- Dilello, goes back, to statistics to explain ýýwhy certain age groups pay higher mnsurance rates. "Statistics show an .18-9ear-old boy is more prone to cause afi ac- cident," -says Dilello. "Girls~ records are better." In fact, some companies will not even insure young maie drivers andý instead prefer to insure more- ex- perienced drivers. .,This,. ,sgys Dilello, keeps those drivers' in- surance rates low. He groupse msurance into three categories: High risk drivers - (fir-. st-trne drivers) standard markgt4 (everyday drivers,) and preferred risk drivers (drivers with minimal accidents aûid tickets). 11eç says it's the best way to keep. insurance costs down. "Stay' free of accidents and tickets, and eventually insurance. rates will corne down, " he says. As for government-run insuran- ce, Dilello believes that would be a losing proposition for the gover- nment. In British Columbia where there is government-run insurance he says rates have steadily increased over the years. "'Governrnent-run insurance is a losing proposition which eventually ail taxpayers will have to pay for," hesays. A driver of a car should be covered with at least. $1 million liabiity, suggests Dilello. He also, recommends a $50 comprehensive deductible, a $250 collision deduc- tible, and an equal arnount of liability insurance fi- a second; driver.
