The store caters to those who make their own beer and wine. Canadian magicians are to perform at Children's Festival A unique touring illusion show, to be held Saturday afternoon in the Perry St. parking lot, will make up part of the downtown BIA Children's Festival.. Gary and Deanna Edmunds of Mississauga are the Phantasma and Jade in the show which is a rmobile Canadian Museum of Magic, the first museum of its kind in Canada. "It's really a study of Canadian rnytholoy," says Deanna Edmunds, of the museum, now awaiting word on a government grant to make special effect photographs of even- ts outlines in the museum. Edmunds says the show is for people interested in the super- natural - but this show is "distinctly Canadian." For example, there's one of her own favorite myths, the "St. Louis Light" in Prince Albert, Sask., which she herself has witnessed. The Edmunds have seen the "phantom train lights" there, even when the train. track was removed by locals. "It's incredible...there's nothing like it," she says of the "Poltergeist-like event. " Dr. Troyer, the witchhunter from Long Point, Ont., is also featured as are the Black Donnellys of Lucan, Ont., sasquatches of B.C. and Group of Seven artist Tom Thom- pson, who died of a "mysterious" drowning death. "We're focusing on main Canadian artists and writers who have had mythology in their works or writings," says Edmunds of the myths taken from the works of Pauline Johnson, Robertson Davies, Lauren Harrie, Mackenzie King and William Lyon McKenzie. She believes there has been little focus on Canadian culture, par- ticularly in the school years before college or university. The Edmunds are magicians who love their coun- try, she says. "We are true magicians who love the art of magic....and we are true Canadians," she says. Their 16-foot truck also visits schools and provincial parks. The Whitby show will be 40 minutes in length and will feature illusions, a dragon and a wizard, and wrap up with Phantasma laying on a bed of nails. By DONNA DONALDSON D & G's Wine & Malt Shoppe opened their newest and largest store at 185 Thickson Rd. N., Whit- by, for all the winebibers and beer lovers. Owned by Gerda and Dave Repol of Whitby, the store offers ingredients and hardware for making wine and beer. "We hope it's going to be really good, we have lots of Whitby customers already," said Gerda Repol, before their grand opening July 4. The Repols have two other 'locations. Their first store opened four years ago in Ajax, and their second location has been in Markham for 2½ years. She said this is the first store of its kind in Whitby, and the response to their other stores has been"great." Repol said the idea of making wine and beer came from her husband as a hobby the two of them could share together, and later tur- ned out to become a business. "We started out in our basement five years ago. We used to have wine-tasting parties, which was a lot of fun. That's how it all started, we used to compare homemade wine to bought wine," said Repol. The Repols have an old-fashioned van with their company logo on it, which dave Repol restored from scrap. They use the van for advertising, and had it at their other two locations when they first opened. "The van always seems to make people smile," said Repol. Repol said a lot more people than they realized make their own wine and beer. "If we don't have what our customers want, we ,try our dar- ndest to get it for them," she said. She also said they will even give lessons on making wine and beer for their customers, and if someone is having problems they can call them at home or at the store. The Repols send out a newsletter two or three times a year to customers on their mailing list to offer helpful hints and store specials. "It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun meeting all different kinds of people," said Repol. 6 THE EDMUNDS THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY 7DURHA 0F DURHAM DURHAM NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING Take notice that Regional Council willi recommendation of the Planning Committee at a: held on: consider the meeting to be JULY 15,1987 AT 10:00 A.M.
