WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8,1987, PAGE 19 Lakers are a no-show in Brooklin Monday night FROM PAGE 17 Singles went to Paul st. John, Barry Brear, Randy Gallas, Eric Peronni, Blaine Harrison and Andy Peronni. Wayne Colley. went the distance between the pipes for Brooklin and chipped in with two assists along the way. Former Redment Ed. Comeau, who was given a one year release by coach Peter Vipond a few nights earlier, notched one for Fergus, as did new teammates Keith McLeod and Bill Cuddy. The score on the previous Tuesday was almost the same - an 18-3 romp over Scarborough Saints atLuther Vipond Arena in Brooklin. The Saints only had 10 runners and two goaltenders dressed for the match-up. Derek Keenan split a six-point night with three goals and three assists. Meredith hit for a hat trick with a pair each from Harrison and Fusco. Jerry Fitzgerald, Jeff Garlin, Gil Nieuwendyk, Brian Colm, Eric Peronni, Kevin Antrim, St. John, and Brear rounded out the scoring. Brear, a former Green Gaels player, has been contributing well since joining the Redmen squad, scoring in his first two games. Saints were again held to one goal a period. Adam Kluwak, John McLinden and Wayne Mom- bourquetter had the goals. Peterborough Lakers were to have travelled to Brooklin Monday night but proved to be a no-show. With the officials and Redmen waiting, Vipond made a call to the lift-lock city and learned the game had been omitted from Lakers' OLA game sheet. Vipond hopes arrangements can be made to play the game sometime this week. Dinner honors Nieuwendyk FROM PAGE 1 was the way it was all year." Nieuwendyk grew up in Whitby and played hockey throughout the Whitby minor hockey league system. He joined the Pickering Panthers of the Junior B hockey league in 1983. In 1984 he made the move to United States college hockey playing for Cornell Univer- sity. Prior to the 1983 Ontario Hockey League draft, Nieuwendyk says he was contacied by OHL teams but he informed them he was going to play college hockey. "Going to school while playing hockey was a good idea," he says. But because hockey was so deman- ding, he took the bulk of his classes during the summer, finishing this year in late June. He will return to Cornell next year to complete his degree in business management. Because of classes and a fear of being injured, Nieuwendyk decided not to play for the Whitby Warriors of the junior A lacrosse league this season. "I didn't want to get injured playing lacrosse. Calgary is paying enough for me," he says. He won't divulge his salary or his signing bonus, saying only "It was pretty good money. I'm very happy with it. Calgary is a generous organization with a strong core." He has a two-year contract with an optional third year. "It was really important for me to join the Flames when I did. Now I know what is expected of me." During most of his 15 games, Nieuwendyk played centre between Roberts and Joe Mullen. He also played a few games on left wing. During his last season with Cor- nell, he had 26 goals and 26 assists in 22 games- and was one of the 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award for college player of the year. Thé award went to Chris Biati of Harvard. After the Cornell season, Nieuwendyk, who was chosen by Calgary 27th overall and their second pick in the 1985 draft, made the jump to the NHL. He credits numerous people throughout his hockey career Tor helping him make the NHL: his parents; Benny LaHaye, during his year in the Whitby Minor Hockey' Association; Jack Ridgeway, coach with the Pickering Panthers; and Loy Teycroft, coach at Cornell. As for his rookie year, Nieuwen- dyk has set himself two goals. "I would like to play a full season in the NHL and put the puck in the net quite a bit." He says he was confident while he was with Calgary but admits the NHL is still a little awe-inspiring. "You grow up watching guys like Lanny MacDonald playing hockey and the next thing you know, you're sitting next to him in the dressing room " As for MacDonald, Nieuwendyk says he is Mr. Calgary Flame. While Nieuwendyk wants to play in the NHL for a full year, he may not get the chance having his signts on playing for Canada in the 1988 Winter Olympics. That would mean a month off from Calgary. He says he has spoken to the Calgary organization about his wish but no decision has yet been made. For now, the 6'2", 195 lb. Nieuwendyk will be training with Roberts during July by cycling, rowing and working out in the gym. He says he would like to maintain a weight of 185 lbs. during the season. Last Friday night, Nieuwendyk was honored by both the Whitby minor hockey and lacrosse associations. "That was a big honor for me," he says of the dinner. He especially appreciated seven members of the Cornell team attending the affair. "I had three of the best years of my life there," he says.
