Burcan Industries. Ltd. will sup- ply Macau with 3,000 metres of a product called Alidrain Soil Stabilization System. "Alidrain is the most geotechnically advanced -vertical drain system available today," claims Clem Brodeur, president of Burcan. Representatives from Macau in- cluding Mayor Liang Guant Dai from the neighboring Zhuhai economic zone, toured the In- dustrial Dr. unit plant last Friday before attending a reception hosted by Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley. The Alidrian system is used to stabilize soil. It works by placing a vertical piece of Alidrain into soil that is water heavy. Drains are then placed at the surface of the wet soil and new soil is packed on top of the wet soil, ac- ting as a weight. The new soil squeezes down on the wet soil, forcing the water up through the Alidrain and out the drains. Developed and manufactured in Canada, Brodeur says the Alidrain system has been used to accelerate consolidation of seabed mud for a proposed airport a Chek Lap Kok, Hong , Kong; provide vertical drainage for peat in Minnesota; and by the California Department of Transportation for construction of an instrumented test embank- ment at a new bridge. Burcan also supplied almost $3 million worth of Alidrian to a Ger- man engineering company working in Basrah, Iraq in 1982-83. The Alidrain system will be used in Macau for a land reclamation project. Burcan will ship Alidrain to Macau through 1988. The Alidrain system has been manufactured by Burcan at its Whitby premises since 1977. Since then, more than 95 per cent of production has been exported to more than 20 countries around the world. Located at the corner of Brock St. S. and Gilbert, the store is managed by Martin Inkpen, who has lived in Whitby for 30 years. "The 7-Eleven concept is to be neat and provide customers ser- vice," says Inkpen. "The customer wants to come in and get out again, quick." While the store opened for business last Thursday, the grand opening was held last Saturday - at 7 minutes to 11. Contrary to popular belief, 7- Eleven stores are not franchises, they are all company-owned, says Inkpen. He says the Gilbert St. store had been planned for the past six mon- ths. The store will be open 24 hours which does not bother Inkpen since the cashier will never have more than $28 in the till. "Mhe fast robbery at a 7-Eleven, Ferguson's to move down street the guy got $8, " says Inkpen. To advertise the store, specials will be offered during the first few months in the form of coupons. Inkpen says the coupons will be distributed to all homes in Whitby, and will contain discounts on ham- burgers and cheeseburgers.
