WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9,1987, PAGE 17 Senior survey begins NDP candidate for Durham East, Marg Wilbur, cast her ballot at an advance poli Monday in Brooklin. At right is district returning officer Isabel Somerville. Seniors citizen volunteers have begun their survey to determine the needs of Whitby seniors. A total ofs320 seniors will be in- terviewed in the survey. About 100 of that number will be users of trhe Whitby Seniors Activity Centre. Seniors who visit homes to con- duct the survey will be identified by a badge and a letter from Barry THE PC candidate for Durham East was in Brooklin last Thursday with a large entourage of supporters. Candidates view bed allocation The three candidates in Durham East, in which the north ward of Whitby is included, have their own opinions about the recent hospital bed allotment to Whitby General Hospital that didn't include acute care beds. NDP candidate Marg Wilbur said the announcement was "typical of the kind of campaign Peterson (On- - tario premier) has run." She said the government was not doing the public any favors, rather giving them what they should have - more beds in hospitals. She added there was no doubt of the need for more chronic care beds in all hospitals and reminded it was the NDP party who had fought for additional facilities all along. She indicated that although Elston's announ- cement helped, it did not address the basic issues. PC Sam Cureatz also felt Elston's announcement was a political ploy. "It's too bad Murray '(Elston) has succumbed to the fine art of political campaigning," said Cureatz. He said that while he was pleased with the allocation of beds across the region, he was sorry it had*, political overtones. With reference to the plight of Whitby General, he said it appears the hospital is operating on such a fine shoestring that the matter of beds can make a big difference. Cureatz told The Free Press that although the hospital itself was not in his riding, it was used by many of his constituents and that pressure had to be put on the government to alleviate the situation. "You don't always win the war, but if you win a major battle, that is substantial," he offered. Liberal Diane Hamre indicated Elston's announcement of the 306 beds was allocated in August 1986, and had not been released until now because the detailing of how the beds would be distributed had not been arranged. She concluded it was not a political ploy on the part of her government, rather bad timing. But she added bad timing or not, she was pleased the additional beds had been granted and Bowmanville and Port Perry hospitals were pleased with their allotment. She felt the only way to settle the con- cerns at Whitby General was to have the hospital board and the ministry sit down together to see if matters can be resolved. "But one thing you have remember is that once the ad- ditional chronic care. beds have% been allocated, it will free up a number of acute care beds, so there is room in that area," said Hamre. "Taken in that light, the difference in the number of beds requested and that received grows smaller." Looking at the issues FROM PAGE 12 know what our concerns are and that our concerns have to be met." "Driving from one end of the riding to the other while cam- paigning, it came to me that Durham East is the most beautiful place around," said Hamre. "We nave so much going for us in agricultural land, industry and educational facilities...it's one of the special places in Ontario and I want us to have a strong voice in Queen's Park that fights for up- dated policies and sees that proper systems are put in place."
