Ken. Roberts from Richmond, B.C., began the job on Aug 1. The library has been without a bead librarian since last December 1986, following tbe resignation of Margaret McFayde n. Roberts was h hired by the library's board of directors in June. "I1 think there is now more scope andopportunity for libraries in On- tario," says Roberts who, besides being a head librarian, bas had two children's books published, 'Crazy Ideas' and 'Pop Botties,' and bas toured Canada as a puppeteer. He plans to continue writing and will offer a couple of puppet shows at the library during the year, "'Just to keep my hands warm," he says. At the Ricbmond Public Library, Roberts was co-ordinator of children's services and micro- computer services. This is flot bis first trip to Witby. Wile living in Onario, Roberts travelled througb Wbitby many times. But wbile aware of tbe town's population wben be applied for tbe job, be was caugbt off guard by tbe town'sgrowtb III knew tbis 'was an attractive rcommunity but 1 was not prepared for the growtb." Growtb bas caused problems in other areas of town and the library is no exception. Roberts, while acknowledging the library is "in- credibly friendly, " says it was originally built for a smaller population. Ile and trhe boarci oi airectors are aware of the need to increase the services and the building. As an example, he points to the in- creasing popularity of tbe Durham Board of Education's French im- mérsion program. That requires an increase in ~'Frencb books the library should 'crry. However, there is no room for tbose books.- "The board knows the library needs upgrading. Future services will be built on a solid base so ex- pansion will be a mutual pusb," be says. As head librarian, Roberts will also oversee tbe Brooklin library, wbich he says is scheduled for ex- pansion. His other duties will include reports to the board; addressing the needs of residents, looking after the budget, listening and acting on suggestions, and acting as an ad- KEN ROBERTS, librarian. When the Whitby Haspital was built the population was 15,000, today it exceeds 46,000, and probably by the turn of the cen- tury wilI be 70,000. No additional acute beds have been allocated since the Hospital f irst opened in 1969. At the present time, many patients have ta wait in the Emergency Department for several days before space can be faound for them in the Haspital. We feel that it is imperative that the Minister of Health recansider this decision'.
