Angelo's b-ack FROM PAGE 9 Arriving in Canada from Greece as a tourist in 1971, Labropoulos decided to make Canada his home and is now a Canadian citizen. Mr. Submarine allowed Labropoulos to open bis first res taurant in Toronto was the start of a career that he is still pursuing. Wile Labropoulos made bis Toronto restaurant a big success, be was also getting tired of the city life in Toronto. He wanted to remain with Mr. Submarine but in a location in a much quieter town. Witby offered wbat be .was looking for, and in 1977 be bought Bob's Garage, renovating it into a restaurant and home. It was very difficult in the beginning," he says, recalling the slow years witb bis first Whitby restaurant. "Brock St. N. was just a two-lane road back then and there wasn't alI these bouses as there is now. " But the fast growtb of Wbitby in the early eighties changed that. j However, in 1985, Labropoulos became seriously ili and bad to sel bis restaurant. For two years be rested and, recuperated in Ajax, making plans treturn to Witby once again. Wben be sold bis Mr. Submarine in Whitby, the present owner didn't aso buy the home directly beside it. So Labropoulos, still owner of the home, had the property rezoned to permit a takeout restaurant. He is still applying the finishing touches to bis restaurant that will bave sitting roomn for 15 people. people. Blue Sea, a name that Labropoulos got fromn the blue seas j in Greece, will at first offer a fish menu of only breaded balibut. However, be will introduce specials once the restaurant is on its feet *and running. nThere is no way to fail,- says Labropoulos, determined to màke bis fish venture as successful as bis sub sbops. Devesc Group Properties (K- Mart) had applied for the expan- sion of about 9,000 sq. ft. (833 sq. metres) to allow six uses: dry cleaners' distribution, dry cleaners' establishment, haîr- dressing salon, bank or financial institution, business or professional, office, and auto service shop. Also applied for was the ad- ditional use of a clinic. At a public meeting held in June, three area residents had objected to the use of the auto repair shop. The objectors included two residen- ts, William Levelock and W. Kirkton, both of Kendalwood Rd., who previously went to the Ontario Municipal Board to appeal a Town decision to allow the initial expan- sion of the plaza. The 0MB upheld council'.s decision. The most recent objection was answered when Devesc withdrew the request for an auto service b e A -UTOOiV OOL I Sr IA aKCNSRUCIO RESIENJACK " PLUMBING 1TOUS " FLOOR & CARPET " LAWN & GARDEN " PAINTING & OECORATING " MOVING & LIFTING sbop. The prospective tenant for the auto shop was no longer in- terested in the Kendalwood location, according to a 'Planning department report. A number of applications have been made to continue expansion of the plaza. A Devesc representative, during a recent committee meeting, noted the difficulty of development of the plaza because of the frequent need for ap- plications. Town planning staff noted that most of the applications were the result of a conflict of land use designations for the property bet- ween Durham Region's and the Town's official plans. The Region plan designated the property residential even though the K-Mart and Dominion store bad been on the site since 1961. The town designated the property as district commercial.
