WIIBY FREE PR~ESS, WEDNESDAY, OCT013ER 21, 1987, PAGE 3. Whiitby constable makes rescue hilake waters UonsLable Larry Nobbs, a lîve- year veteran of the Durham Regional Police force, lias been credited with saving the life of a Barrie woman after her car left Lake Ridge road early Wednesday morning (Oct. 14), sailed over 30 feet and landed upside-down in Lake Ontario. Const. Nobbs, 30, a Whitby resident, spotted a 1984 Audi being driven erratically near the Sprue Villa around 1 a.m. Nobbs gave chase along Hwy. 2 with speeds reaching 160 km/h. The Audi turned south along Lake Ridge (Durharn Rd. 23), travelled tlirough a stop sign on Baseline then went over a 12-ft. cliff, ending Up in Lake Ontario. Nobbs, who says lie just "'did what had to be done," waded out to the car. He found the woman's body flailing in the water. Police believe the woman was thrown out of the car when it struck a post that acted as a barrier to the lake. Nobbs pulled the woman to shore then returned to the car to see if anyone else was involved. Both Nobbs and the woman were taken to Ajax-Pickering Hospital and treated for hypothermia. June Marie Dunn, 52, ofB2rrie suffered serious neck and ack ii- juries. She is charged with impaired driving, failing to stop for police andâdangerous driving. Addition at Ail Saints An addition to AIl Saints Anglican Churcli has been approved by Whitby council, but the Town wiII not ask for the normal 13-ft. road widening after what one councillor described as a previous mistake. The churcli is located at the nor- thwest corner of Centre St. N. and Dundas St. W. "Centre St. is a one-way street and has a road allowance of 40 feet and under normal circumstances a 13-ft. widening from both sides is required. for a road allowance of 66 f eet, "' states a report f rom the planning department. The Town will not require the rond widenine, sins-' it did not require it when the medical building Was constructed on the east side of Centre St. N. "We didn't ask the medical building for the road allowance, and we won't Io ok for the 13 feet here because we erred," said coun- cillor Joe Drumm. "WelI, we are reaping the rewar- ds of that decision now," he said. Drumrn did not vote in favor of the medical building. The addition will allow for a lounge/meeting room, offices, Sun- day school and nursery space. The church now has to file a formai site plan with the Town. LARRY NOBBS COSUM Bylaw changed for leader's meetings Provincial or, federal party leaders are no longer permitted to hold meetings at Whitby's municipal building or property surrounding property during an election. That amendment to the Town's policy governing the use of the building was approved by council, with the exception of councillor Marcel Brunelle, last Tuesday nîght. The amendment was introduced by councillor Joe Drumm, who in August said he was "embarras sed" when Premier David Peterson was allowed to use the building during the summer election. "I have no objection to the premier seeing council but that was a political rally. This building was not intended for that. The only politics that should go on in this building i s this Town's," said Drumm. But according to Brunelle, the building was constructed for "politicking, people represen- tation. "The implication here is politics is a dirty word. One of the greatest things is to have a leader corne to our political place. If this isn't the place to do it then I want to know where that place is," said Brunelle, adding that the only cost to the Town when Peterson visited was additional staff to dlean up after the event. Mayor' Bob Attersley included the land surrounding the building in Drumm's amendment so "there wnn't he nv dnubt." Atterslp-v iqzid Bef o Hom cons DO y e Wr concern about the visit "got over- played.
