Pre's pi'"'l Joke gift sparks woodburing career By EMILY PARE Dianne Brachvogel knocks on wood to her growing success with the art of pyrography. Four years ago the Whitby resident received a woodburning kit from her parents for Christmas. "It was just a jolie gift," she ex- plains. She turned that joke into a professional hobby. The ancient art of pyrography is the design of pictures into wooden or leather canvasses. Brachvogel enjoys using colors in her work but explains that it is more time consuming and can be difficult to find the right paints. She begins her art by tran- sferring a composition onto a wood canvas, using woodgraining (where possible) and an electric woodbur- ning tool. She adds color where necessary and finishes the canvas with a protective coating. Brachvogel's subjects in her work range from her rendition of' portraits ol grandmother and grandfather to a pyrography of a pack of wolves which she calls 'Companions.' Brachvogel wanted to be very unique in her work. Most pyrographers stay in the crafts of the art but she wanted to touch the true art of pyrography and be recognized as an artist in woodburning. She would like to expand to more challenging work, "I'm tryi ng to get bigger and bigger with my can- vasses," she savs. She did not take art past high school. She was a secretary for three years until she began her passion for pyrography. "I love woodburning," she says. With the support of her three children and husband, Brachvogel can work part-time at Leisure World in the Oshawa Centre and work at home with her art. After being asked if she would go back to working fulltime. Brachvogel says: "After picking the art of pyrography up I don't want to stop." She got most of her inspiration from living out on a farm in Orono for 10 years with her family, before moving to Whitby. "Basically, I'm a country person, ' she says. Brachvogel has lived in Whitby three separate periods of time. "It's stili a nice place to be," she says. From Nov. 2 to Nov. 28 at the Whitby library, Brachvogel's 'The Burning Point' will be shown, bet- ween 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 9 to 5 p.m. Saturday. But visitors can catch Brachvogel in action on Saturday, Nov. 14 when she will do some of her art and let the public participate at the library from2to4p.m. 'I hope my art will stick in people's memories," she says.
