PAGE 2. Wl IITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4. 1987 Region considers proposed GO route to Oshawa Regional council members will today view the route chosen which will see the GO Transit svstem ex- tended through from Whitby to Oshawa by 1991. Ian Williams, consultant for M.M. Dillon Ltd., told regional planning committee his firm had narrowed the selection down to one, from the- four alternatives suggested originally. He indicated the third alternative had been selected which would see the exten- sion follow a route south of the 401 and cross over at Thornton Rd., proceeding northward to the CPR tracks where it would swing east- ward, coming to a halt in the vicinity of the Holiday Inn at Har- mony Road and 401. Stations are planned at Stevenson Rd. and Gibb St. and at the eastern terminal. Williams indicated this route was chosen for many reasons, basically because it would have least impact on the environment. He indicated he had verbal con- firmation from CN with regard to following their tracks south of the 401 and stressed this sanction must be followed up quickly with a writ- ten guarantee or the third alter- native route would be in jeopardy. Williams also said the Province might waive an environmental assessment hearing on the exten- sion, a move which would con- siderably "speed up" construction. He said if the Province ran true to its word, construction could start as early as September, 1988. If not, it could be delayed by as much as two years, making it impossible for Queen's Park to live up to its promise to have GO into Oshawa by 1991. Williams stated the work on the GO extension could be broken up in- to several contracts and that although he was doubtful the entire line could be completed by 1991, pommitments and cash-flow could ïprobably guarantee the section to the Oshawa Shopping Centre area 'would be finished by the due date. Regional chairman Gary Herrema said "This is the most positive thing we have...a good move." He indicated the Province was watching the proceedings with respect to how council accepted the recommendations. Council votes today (Nov. 4) on the matter. "We have to get on with this and get this thing (GO extension) out to Newcastle," said Herrema. Nurses continue rotating strike Nt, HOT STUFF SAVE WITH Durham Region's 100 public health care nurses will continue their rotating strike to show the Region thev are serious about their demands, says Jean Nesbitt, president of Local 57 Ontario Nur- ses Association. The nurses began rotating walkouts last week to back deman- ds for higher wages. The nurses are seeking a 13-per cent salary in- crease over the next two years while the Region is offering 4.4 per cent in the first year and 4.5 per cent in the second year. Nesbitt'says the rotating strike maintains some services but has caused cancellation of pre-natal classes and various parenting classes. The strike has also cancelled home care services, which Nesbitt says management is trying to take HOT STUFF HIGH EFFICIENCY AU T$42 FACTORY REBATE use Now's a great time to movesup to today's superior heating and air conditioning technology. "With 1,500 clients and six management, I don't know how they can do that," says Nesbitt. Durham personnel commissioner Terry Stevens was unavailable for To get traffic lights installed at two intersections of Manning Rd., the Town of Whitby will have to pay for it. Members of Durham's works committee last week decided they would install lights at the intersec- tion of Thickson and Manning, and Anderson and Manning in the spring of 1988 if the Town of Whitby pays for them. But the Region won't contribute towards the cost. Whitby council had asked the Region to install the lights at a cost of $120,000. The Town would pay the Region for installation if the Region would reimburse them when the in- tersections met provincial criteria comment. "We want the Region to know we are~serious. Their offer doesn't even keep up with inflation," says Nesbitt. for the signais. But a report indicates there is not enough traffic now to meet provin- cial guidelines and there might not be enough traffic next year when the lights are to be installed. As the Province provides 50 per cent fun- ding if guidelines are met only in the year when lights are installed, the Region fears it will not be able to qualify for any subsidy. Construction on the section of Manning between Thickson and Anderson is expected to be com- pleted by the end of this month. The works committee recom- mendation will go before full coun- cil today (Nov. 4). Fraud charge laid A Whitby company and its owner have been charged by RCMP with operating an illegal East Indian videotape ring. Acting on a tip, Sgt. Rick Lee said RCMP carried out a search warrant on Rosray International Trade Inc. at 214 Dundas St. E. in July. RCMP officers found 2,280 cuplicated copies of Esquire brand videotapes and labels for another 25,000 tapes, said Lee. Officers also seized 28 videotape recorders and various other equipment. Charged with fraud over $1,000 and two counts of trademark violation are Rosray International and Dhian Thapar, 42 of Coniston Cres. Rosray and Thapar will appear in Oshawa provincial court on Nov. 19. Hazardous FROM PAGE 1 in Durham would not necessarily be included as part of the regular garbage pick-up due to the cost. "It's an issue we are all concer- ned about and we are trying to find the answers," said McCorkell. 1- . &à No reimbursement if Town installs lights LL LL m LL. U.- il D. 1. S INSURANCE BROKERS LTD.
