WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1987, PAGE 11 Town, Brick disagree over building materials The Brick wants metal and Town planners want b;ick in a disagreement over the architecture of the store to locate in Whitby. The Brick Warehouse Ltd. wants to change the architectural elevation of the newly constructed building at the northwest corner of Thickson Rd. and Dundas St. E. so that the store entrance area is 30 feet high with an orange-red metalt cladding and a pyramid roof. But Town planning staff consider both the metal and color "offen- sive," noting the existing building is mostly red brick with a green metal roof. A Town planning staff report in- dicated that after "protracted and intense" negotiations, agreement had been reached on other proposed changes -The Brick dropped plans to use stucco panels in place of the existing glazing (windows and doors) and also agreed to relocate a sign proposed for the roof. The green, metal-clad pyramid on top will also be kept. But store representatives insist that square- shoulder facing be metal and in the orange-red (with white neon let- ters) corporate colors in the sign. "Why would you use metal when your name is Brick?" councillor Gerry Emm asked store represen- tatives at an adnministration com- mittee meeting last week. A report on the negotiations was presented by staff to determine committee's position on the matter. . A representative for the store said the company is "attempting to get away from the brick" so that it can adapt to almost any location, noting that while Brick may be a normal building material in On- tario, it is not in other places. He said that five other Brick stores now under construction all have the red cladding. Rather than metal, Town plan- ning staff want the finishing material to be red brick. And staff say a third alternative offered by The Brick -a finishing material of red ceramic tile which was used at The Brick's Ottawa store - has "some merit" but still recommend brick. "Our concern still lies with the materials and the colors," said planning director Bob Short. Councillor Joe Bugelli suggested that a band across the structure, with The Brick's corporate colors in the lettering, might convey what the store wants to in the sign. Bugelli also mentioned that Toys R' Us wanted a 32-ft. giraf fe in front of the store as is used in other store locations, but an agreement was made not to use it in Whitby. Administrative committee mem- bers recommended that the sign, to be red and white, be limited to the SEE PAGE 12 FURNITURE& UPHOLSTERY LTD. *ANTIQUES «NO-DIP RESTORED STRIPPING •CUSTOM eREPAIRS UPHOLSTERY •REFINISHING A large selection of Victorian parlour furniture available 413 DUNDAS ST.
