WH rBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER18, 1987, PAGE 3 Town has problem finding school guards The Town of Whitby is finding it "impossible" to get school crossing guards, says Mayor Bob Attersley. The mayor made the comment after council voted Monday to place a guard at the CPR crossing on Garden St. while turning down a guard for the intersection of Anderson St. and Bradley Dr. Guards are paid $161 every two weeks, which Attersley says is about the same as other towns in the region. "But no one in Whitby wants to be a guard," he said. Council upheld an operations. committee regarding the two locations. But it was noted that a guard will not be placed at the tracks until a "suitable" one is found. The Anderson guard was turned down despite another Boarding house addition turned down by council Without much discussion Whitb council unanimously turne down an application by a Euclid St. homeowner to build an addition to her home to house ex-psychiatric patients. (Regional councillor Tom Edwards did not vote on the matter, noting a conflict of interest since he lives across the street from the owner, Lorraine Willis). Before the vote, solicitor for the applicant, Bill Livingstone, told council that five ex-patients are now boarding at the house and the addition is simply to make them more comfortable. "I am here before you to make a sincere plea and .convince you gentlemen this is appropriate," he said . The application was for a two-room addition, with each room to house four patients. The council vote supports an administrative committee recommendation from last week. But Livingstone said that recommendation came after councillors asked questions about the patients, and the decision was not based on planning matters. Councilior Joe Drumm, a member of the committee, responded by saying "No one on the committee made a deragatory remark about the applicant or the house." Whitby branch now in Oshawa The Whitby branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society has undergone some changes since the summer. As of Nov. 1 the Whitby branch has become the Whitbny unit of the Oshawa branch of the Red Cross. This is similar to what has already occurred to Bowmanville/Newcastle to the east of Oshawa. Red Cross work in these communities is done under the name of Durham East Unit of the Oshawa branch. As far as Whitby Red Cross programs are concerned, there is very little change. Edsting programs will carry on, for the most part, as usual. The biggest change is that there is no longer a Red Cross office in Whitby. Secretary Mary Sano is now located in the Oshawa office, and the Whitby Red Cross listing in the telephone book reveals the Oshawa phone number. The decision came after there was no president to succeed Marion Irwin nor volunteers to assume such positions as program chairmen. Whitby has retained its original charter so that should there be a desire or a need in the future to once again have a separate Whitby branch, such separati ýn would not be difficult to affect. For information regarding Red Cross work in Whitby, call the Oshawa office at 723-2933. Either Mary Sano or Fran Harsell will help. Any mailing should be sent to the Oshawa office. Region approves plaza FROM PAGE 1 that the downtown BIA is trying to attract more specialized businesses. He said the BIA opposes strip plazas since they may alter the shopping patterns of people who now go to the downtown area. He said the Dundas St. W. plaza, which is not in the downtown core area, could set a precedent for more plaza development. "The core area, I feel, is important to give residents a feeling that this is a community," he said. Whitby councillor Gerry Emm, who voted against the plaza plan, said such outside uses "take the thunder away" from what is being planned in the downtown. He agreed with Newman that a commercial strip could evolve between Whitby and Ajax. A site plan agreement between Nard Investments and the Town is now required before the plaza development can begin. attempt by Angela Fountain to have the guard placed at the intersection. She has appeared before council and committees five times in her attempt. She said the guard would save students who attend Pringle Creek school from walking a quarter mile out of their way to ross at Anderson and Manning. But councillor Joe Bugelli noted that that intersection (Anderson and Bradley) is no different than 15 others in Town." "This problem is not going away and it is only going to get worse," he said. Council was also informed the lights at Manning and Anderson will not be installed until the spring of 1988.
