For the third time in six years, Owasco Volkswagen. Ltd., of Whitby has won thA Gold Masters Award for service. The award is presented by Volkswagen of Canada to the dealership in Canada that offers the best service to its customers. "There are about 230 dealers in Canada at our level vying for the award but. we w ere the best," j says Owasco service manager Ralph Speelman. r In top six sincel198l Speelman explained that Volkswagezn dealers in Canada are divided into lhree levels based on the number of cars a dealership selis in a one-year period. The award is based on customer satisfaction, a mini- mium 1number -of customer complaints and mechanic factory training, says Speelman. "Basically it is a contest to see who offers the best service te their customers,!" says Speelman who bas been the service manager at Owasco' since 1972. .Owasco, according te Speelman, bas been in the top six ranlcings since 1981, winning the award twice and placirig second three times. A total of 70 people now work at the Volkswagen and Audi dealership which, when it began business in 1972, employed six. Owasco was started by Frank Verwey Sr. who is stili the owner today. That figure is expected te be 700 for 1987 - which helped Owasco receive the National Gold Master Sales Award for 1987. "The award is for achieving a certain level of sales, and meeting and passing projected sales forecasts," explained Verwey. "We have won that award before and we also have the. number one salesman in Canada here at Owasco for the past'five years.» He was referring to Henry Ziesrnan. Verwey also attributes Volkswagen's and in turn Owasco's success to the eli- mination of bouindaries in the car market. Verwey says a Volkswagen Fox, Elimin ating the. bounckiries at a cost of about $8,600, appeals te. the lower end of the car market while an Audi turbo Avant, at a cost ofapproximately $50,000, appeals to the higher end of the market.
